Some bad movies are so bad they are funny; most bad movies, however, are simply bad, and in order to be funny they need a little help. Debuting on television in 1988 and running for eleven years, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 did precisely that. The premise was wacky. An average Joe type guy is trapped on a wayward satelite by a mad scientist who is convinced he can dominate the world through bad movies. Each episode included several broad-farce sketches between the guy, his robot pals, and the mad scientist--but the big thing was the movie, watched by our hapless victim and robots Tom Servo and Crow. The film on this occasion is a double feature: an episode from the serial RADAR MEN OF THE MOON, one of the least appealing serials ever made, and THE CORPSE VANISHES, one of the least appeal films Bela Lugosi ever made. Since there were a lot of unappealing serials and unappealing Lugosi movies, that's saying something.

The serial chapter is exactly that: a chapter. RADAR MEN borrowed a lot of footage from the truly first rate serial THE ADVENTURES OF CAPT. MARVEL, and the melting mountain from that series is heavily featured in this footage. As for THE CORPSE VANISHES, a 1942 Monogram production, it wasn't the worst film Lugosi ever made, but it came close enough. Brides are dropping dead at the altar--and to make matters worse their bodies are stolen immediately thereafter. The police are baffled, but intrepid girl reporter Pat Hunter (Luana Walters) discovers that all the brides wore a strangely scented orchid corsage. Pat tracks the orchid to horticuluralist and mad scientist Dr. Lorenz (Lugosi), who is snatching up the brides to drain them of bodily fluids need by his decaying wife (Elizabeth Russell.

As MST3k is sort a show within a show within a movie format, I like to review each part of the episode as sometimes a good or bad part can save or ruin the entire episode.

The Movie: Bela Lugosi is a mad scientist (or they any sane scientists in these movies?) who kidnaps brides on their wedding day. He is harvesting their youth to keep his wife looking young. Using inhuman abilities and convenient plot holes, a female reporter begins to solve the riddle of the missing brides. This movie isn't that bad in a cheesy classic horror movie way. If this were on late at night, I would probably watch it. Plus you get to see Bela beat on more lab assistants besides poor Tor Johnson.

Host Segments: They are ok. The barber shop segment wasn't too bad. And I always did love the segments where Joel gives the bots treats for critiquing the movie.

Riffs: Compared to most of season 1, there is a marked increase in the amount of riffs - and some of them are very funny.

Overall: This isn't a slight but for a year 1 episode, it is actually very good with a lot of laughs. In fact, this is one of the few season I episodes I would recommend to casual viewers. It is as if the MST3k crew had finally gotten used to the format. But compared to the other seasons, it is probably a slightly below average episode.

Other: There is a short of the continuing adventures of Commando Cody. While most of the Commando Cody shorts are exciting and very watchable, this is probably the weakest one as most of the time the crew are flying back to Earth.
