Editorial Reviews

Review

"I've been extraordinarily blessed and encouraged in reading The Mystery of Spiritual Sensitivity by Carol Brown. We have been reading this book in my Women's Journaling Group for the past several months. This is literally one of the best books I have ever encountered." Susan M. Austin, M.D., Albany, NY

Your book is the richest resource I have found on the gift of discernment and intercession. Practical tools help equip people to partner with God and help shed unnecessary spiritual baggage. EVERYONE should read this book. It sits on my bookshelf along with other foundational books to my faith journey.
Christina Files, Freelance Editor

Your books came into my hands when I already thought I was going crazy. This is the first time in my life I have heard about burden bearing. Prayers from your books brought much relief and I would like to bring this knowledge in my country because so many people are suffering because of lack of knowledge.

A reader from Croatia

Carol has put her finger on a huge problem in a way that brings healing and understanding. Sensitivity is a painful gift; we must cherish and protect those who carry such deep links between us, God, and each other. Read this book and learn a way back to peace.
E. James Wilder, PhD, cofounder of Shepherd's House, Pasadena, CA

The Mystery of Spiritual Sensitivity is a workbook for healers, written by a healer who has persevered through her own healing at the side of a trustworthy God. Read Carol's book, re-read it and appropriate it into your life and ministry.
Paul & Gretel Haglin, Engineer, pastor, radio teacher, founders of Resurrection Ministries, Hawk Point, MO

From the Author

The Mystery of Spiritual Sensitivity is the first of two books on the subject of spiritual, emotional and neurological sensitivity. I wrote it because I don't want you or someone you know to live one day longer with a sadness that seems bottomless. I don't want your inner pressure to build to the point that you are tempted to cut yourself to release it, or do something self-destructive to numb the pain you feel. You are one of God's "Special Forces." Your nervous system is different than most. You are uniquely designed as a highly sensitive person, one who can join Jesus in the work He began and continues to do--reconciling people to God, to themselves, and restoring relationships between people. It is my hope to give voice and vocabulary to the way many experience life. You may feel crazy, but probably a good portion of the craziness you feel may not even be your own!
Blessings, Carol

More About the Author

I was raised in a rural farming community in Iowa for the first 16 years of life. The family moved to Minnesota where I finished high school and then pursued academics. I met my husband, David, during his internship with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We married in 1969, and have ministered together in Idaho, Indiana, Ohio, Mihigan, Australia, Germany, Finland, and Canada--David as pastor, counselor, and trainer, I as educator and helpmate. We have two daughters and five grandchildren.

I began telling stories when I had enough brothers for an audience! There were four all told and finally a sister, but by then I was 14! We lived on a farm in N.E. Iowa near the Mississippi River and attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. I draw on the adventures of growing up for my children's stories. Sassy Pants is the first in a series of four. The second, Sassy Pants Makes Amends will be coming out around the end of 2011. And, who knows how many more--there were many critters on that farm!

I received a B.A. in Anthropology and Languages from Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1968, and elementary education teaching certification in 1972 from Boise State College, Boise, Idaho. While our children were small, I substituted in the local elementary school, helped out at church, and was a stay-at-home Mom. In 1986, I received an M.A. in College Instruction with special emphasis in English As A Second Language from Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA. I taught at North Idaho Jr. College, Gonzaga University, and Whitworth College. I joined my husband at Elijah House, Inc., Post Falls, ID as Education Director in 1989. In 1994 while teaching in Germany, I experienced physical difficulties that were later diagnosed as multiple sclerosis. We spent 8 years in Victoria, B.C. where David supervised the internship of Elijah House Canada. I spent that time as intercessor, in recovery, and writing The Mystery of Spiritual Sensitivity.

In addition to being passionate about reading and writing, I enjoy nature, music, and playing the piano. I also do pottery, knit, crochet, and paint. David and I worship at a bilingual church ministering to Hispanics in the Grand Rapids area.

As well as write, I also speak to various groups, in churches and out, give seminars and workshops, of limited duration. You can find that information at www.fromgodsheart.com. My current faith assignment is to stay close to Jesus so that I can hear what He says and write it down.

This book is about how we are to bear one anothers burdens. God has designed some of us with a highly sensitive nervous system that allows us to empathize on deep levels with God and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illuminating Read, March 25, 2008

Ever feel like an emotional sponge? When you hang out with someone who is stressed do you ever "soak" up their drama? Or have you ever met someone and get a "vibe" that they have issues going on - their exterior looks happy but you just get a feeling that they're really upset on the inside?

If that type of scenario sounds familiar you'll want to read this book!

All my life I've had a "sense" about people. I've been able to pick up "vibes." I always thought it was weird and just tried to ignore it. After reading this book I realize being highly sensitive is common. After reading this book I realize it's not weird; it's just the way I'm wired! Finally - I understand now what's going on and not only how to cope but how to thrive.

I liked the way the author took spiritual concepts and made them easy to understand. I appreciated the combination of spiritual and scientific data. The book was an easy read. You'll want to read it once for yourself and if you are at all like me you'll reread it for someone you know that is a highly sensitive person.

I feel like now I have a better understanding not only of myself, but also of some of my family members, a coworker, a client, and a few of my friends.
