1.0 out of 5 stars Not Nancy's Finest Hour
Most of the later Grossett/Dunlap prints written by "Harriet Adams/Carolyn Keene" are essays on tourism and history taking Nancy out of River Heights and into other countries. In this one she travels to France and we get a history lesson which takes precedence over a dull mystery!! Even Ned Nickerson isn't in this one!! BORRRRRING!!

Alchemy, dreams, threats, and a mysterious past make this one of the most Gothic and memorable of Nancy's adventures. (P.S. This is a great one to read if you want to forget that you have a cold or something. I read it when I had hives and it was a life-saver.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy and pals sleuthing in France, November 9, 2002
This review is from: The Mystery of the 99 Steps (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 43) (Hardcover)
"The Mystery of the 99 Steps" finds Nancy, her father Carson Drew, and her friends Bess and George on a trip to France. In between touring Notre Dame Cathedral and learning about the patron saint of France, Joan of Arc, the girls stay on the trail of a mystery.

Several times Nancy is warned by srange characters to stop her investigations, but she persists and is rewarded by uncovering a blackmail scheme involving one of her father's clients, wealthy financier Monsieur LeBlanc.

Carolyn Keene found the right formula many years ago to thrill young readers, and to secure their loyalty as lifelong fans. Courageous, resourceful Nancy charms successive generations. Highly recommended.

So far out of all the Nancy Drew books I have read this is my favorite. This is my favorite because it holds you in supense the whole way through and you never want to put it down. I would recommend this book to people who love a thrilling supense. This is not a very hard book to read but it is not too easy either.

I am a HUGE fan of Nancy Drew and have read more than half the series. This is one of my favorites. It is "cliff-hanging" and not too easy and not too hard to follow. I couldn't stop reading this almost every page was a "page turner" I loved it. I would read this if I were you!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mystery of the 99 Steps, March 2, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Mystery of the 99 Steps (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 43) (Hardcover)
Nancy, Bess George and Mr. Drew fly off to France to work on a couple of cases. First, a wealthy financier, Monsieur Leblanc, has been frightened into selling large amounts of stocks and bonds and Mr. Drew has been hired by some Leblanc's associates to discover what has frightened the man so much. Second, Nancy has been asked by a Frenchwoman living in River Heights to unlock the secret of a dream she keeps having where she is blindfolded and about to fall down a flight of steps with someone whispering "99 steps". The dream actually happened to the woman when she was a child growing up in France, but she doesn't remember where the 99 steps are located. This is another tour guide with Nancy and her friends going to Notre Dame, the Louvre, Versailles and stopping in Orleans to learn about Joan Of Arc. Somewhere amongst all of this touring, Nancy manages to find time to solve the mystery; unfortunately, it's not before the book manages to bore you to tears.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK, December 10, 2011
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Mystery of the 99 Steps (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 43) (Hardcover)
WOW! The Mystery of the 99 Steps all starts with one of Nancy's friends having a dream of falling down a flight of 99 steps blindfolded. She has this dream many times. So Nancy works on this case for Mrs. Blair. Since Mrs. Blair used to live in France, Nancy decides to go there. Before she leaves to go to the airport, she gets a warning note from a man calling himself Monsier Neuf.

She goes to France anyway. Once in France, she goes sightseeing with her dad, who is working on a case with a "frightened financier, Monsieur Leblanc. While sightseeing, Nancy comes up with a few clues. Later she wonders if her dad's case and her own could be connected in some way. She finds out later that they are connected. Monsieur Leblanc is giving large amounts of money to a blackmailer calling himself Monsieur Neuf who says he can turn anything into gold, when really he is hiding gold inside things, putting them in a substance, then pulling out the gold. Nancy finds the place where Monsieur Neuf is doing this work down a flight of 99 steps. Neuf was Mrs. Blair's caretaker when she was young. One day when Neuf was watching her he took her to his laboratory blindfolded so she wouldn't know the location of the place. I love this book and Nancy Drew is my favorite series!!!!!!

In Mrs. Josette Blair's strange dream, she is falling down a long flight of stairs while someone whispers "99 steps". Mrs. Blair also tells of notes linked to her dream from a strange Monsieur Neuf. When Nancy recieves notes similair to the ones Mrs. Blair recieved warning her off the case, she decides to go to where she hopes the answers lie. Paris, France. She and her friends join her father in Paris, who is working on "the case of the frightened financier". As Nancy plunges deeper into the mystery, she gets herself, and her friends, in and out of dangerous situations. Soon she realizes that her case and father's may be connected! With the help of friends and family, Nancy finally gathers enough information that leads to the capture of a cunning criminal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mysteries of France, May 19, 2011

This review is from: The Mystery of the 99 Steps (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 43) (Hardcover)
This book has many of the elements that make the Nancy Drew series great. There are mansions, mystery staircases, international intrigue, and more. In this book Nancy finds herself flying to France searching for a mystery staircase which may be related to one of her father's cases. Amid balls and chateaus Nancy unravels a mystery. The ending will likely seem wholly unbelievable to the older reader, but it captivated me when I was younger, and the book is a good read. I've found that this book has stood the test of time better than some other Nancy Drew books.
