Most listeners know John Brannen by his Alt. Country output, but damned if his best work wasn't his first. Mystery Street has been out of print for a dozen years or more, which is a shame- Brannen's voice has never sounded more powerful, and his songcraft hasn't met this standard since. Think of a cross between Bon Jovi and Springsteen and you'll get some idea of what this sounds like. "Desolation Angel" in particular is a brilliant piece; I recall watching the video at home as a teenager, but it too has seemingly gone the way of the Dodo bird. "Twilight Is Over" is gorgeous and yearning; "Paradise Highway" packs a hard punch. Why Brannen turned away from this genre, particularly as he was so darn good at it, is beyond me. I own three of his other discs and he does country well enough, but "Mystery Street" is his defining, albeit out-of-print work. It's a lost, late-80's classic in the best sense.
