Book Description

Close to London, the tiny and fanciful town of Amersham is shaken by a sudden spate of homicides, starting with the murder of Jane Ferrier as she’s walking home from work. Each month that comes along leads to the death of another young woman: Sarah Parker is killed while on holiday with her boyfriend, whereas young lawyer Michelle Pearson meets her grisly end in a crowded public park.

With each murder taking place exactly one month apart on the 15th day, it’s a race against time to find the killer before the next woman is taken. Add in the fact that each death has involved a poisonous dart and a green-eyed, blonde-haired victim, and the mystery deepens. Why were these women targeted? Does it have anything to do with their history of turbulent love affairs? And who could possibly have the knowledge and means to kill with poison-tipped darts?

With Chief Inspector Patrick Campbell in charge of the cryptic case, he must get to the bottom of the Amersham murders before anyone else gets hurt, and with the help of his trusty colleagues, Inspector Geoffrey and Constable Tim, they create a list of possible suspects. The admirable Eric, suave Neil, apprehensive Jeremy, modest Wilbur, calm Philip, passionate Victor and vibrant Toby all have something they’re hiding – but is it what Patrick Campbell thinks? Or could there be more to these men than meets the eye?

As the murderous riddle unfolds, we meet a whole host of intriguing characters who could help the Chief Inspector hunt down the murderer, but with his leads running out fast, will he finally end the trail of blood… or add to it with his own?

The Dart Murders invites you to take a front-row seat at this British murder mystery, giving you the chance to whittle down the suspects alongside the Chief Inspector and his team. With all the clues and evidence provided for you, will you guess who was behind the Dart Murders?

This book was a pretty good read in addition to being a quick read. Although I truly enjoyed the story, I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of foul language. My praise to the author as well as my thanks.

Being a fan of Sherlock, Luther, and many other British Murder Mysteries, I instantly fell in love with this book. This is easily one of the best psychological thrillers I read on Kindle in a very long time.

5/5, instant favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars A British murder mystery that will keep you guessing February 19, 2014

The Dart Murders by James Kipling takes you to another thrilling crime spree teeming with mystery, suspense, and anticipation. In the curious town of Amersham, in close proximity to London, three dead bodies are found in different locations, one month apart from each other. What’s suspicious is that their deaths all fall on the 15th of the month. While it may look like it is the one thing they have in common, the detectives find out that the similarities do not stop there. The murder victims do not only share the same physical attributes, they also share the same (bad) luck in matters of the heart.

Chief Inspector Patrick Campbell and his colleagues round up the usual suspects, each one having secrets that could be a motive to the dart killings. The slew of characters introduced in the book only adds to the intrigue and complexity of the case. It’s one of those stories that gets the reader involved and invested. It’s a guessing game that’s hard to win because just when you thought you got the killer pegged, you are proven wrong as the story unfolds. You can’t help but be immersed in the story, because there is this sense of satisfaction once you think you are getting to the truth.

By now, readers of Kipling’s books have become accustomed to such a thrill ride that they become murder mystery junkies who need a regular dose of serial killer fiction. This time, they’ll have their fill of Kipling’s brand of British detective murder mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery Thriller & Suspense Novel December 28, 2013
Verified Purchase
When I started this I was looking for one of the engaging type of crime thrillers that makes you eager to uncover the mystery and get to the bottom of the murder mystery, and The Dart Murders certainly held up to that end of the bargain. This was a thoroughly enjoyable mystery novel that easily kept me sucked into the plot, searching for clues amidst the tale and trying to figure out why these women were killed, why the weapon of choice was a venom dart and what connected them all together?

Mr. Kipling shows his writing chops superbly with a well crafted plot, solidly fleshed-out characters (from the suspects to the detectives) and with an eye for detail that leaves no stone unturned as the story progresses. It's the perfect kind of mystery thriller & suspense novel that gives you clues, makes you interested in the case and leaves you with a satisfying ending that keeps you guessing until it is all said and done.

WOW ! What an awesome book. Filled with murder and suspense. Wanted to keep reading to find out WhoDoneIT and I did LOL. The author pays attention to detail and is so easy to read. I thought I had the killer pegged but I was wrong. I very much enjoyed the intrigue and thrill of this book. Was a nail biter and I could not stop reading it and finished it in one day. I would highly recommend this book as well as the author James Kipling, he is brilliant and I can not wait to find more of his work. I was enthralled in the story line or the characters and I was kept locked in the book till the very end. You wont be disappointed. 100 stars and a huge Thank You ! Keep em coming James !

"We suspect everybody, till they are proven innocent". So says Chief Inspector Patrick Campbell, one of the best in the field in England. This is the underlying theme of the British crime fiction The Dart Murders. The author James Kipling presents one murder after the other in serial style and with each murder, has Chief Inspector Campbell and his team relentlessly investigating several personalities until...bulls eye! The murderer is revealed.

These are not your run-of-the-mill murders because of the unusual weapons used which add to the complexity of the case. So too are the number of characters involved who keep the reader on his/her toes with their various idiosyncrasies. Case in point is the overbearingly verbose Carla Carson with her steel-rimmed spectacles. The reader has to have his/her head screwed on to keep up with all the character sketches, the police statements and who says what.

The Dart Murders is also a British murder mystery in which Chief Inspector Campbell and his team has to face the classic response of citizens to any criminal activity - reluctance to divulge information out of fear for one's life. In fact such a fear is realized by characters in the story when they contemplate giving the inspectors clues to the murders. "Most people are...scared that if they...give...valuable evidence, they may become the next victim."

Kipling cleverly uses omniscient narrative style in telling the story to reveal the various points of view of the characters. This way, the reader gains understanding of the events, including background information, from several perspectives. These insights are however controlled by the author to maintain suspense.
