Book Description

November 1997
Carefully chosen by the discriminating editors of Mystery Scene magazine comes an incomparable collection of stories by an unbeatable lineup of authors! Lawrence Block pits Keller, his humane hitman, against a client who tried to con him. Carole Nelson Douglas dances to a dangerous turn as an office party fuels a fateful revenge. John Harvey fans the flames of family relations in urban, lower-class England. Sharyn McCrumb makes a fatal match at a deadly dating service. Anne Perry brings blackmail home in a vexing Victorian mystery. Sara Paretsky gets up close and personal with V.I. Warshawski, her adored heroine. And Ian Rankin deviously turns the tables on a notorious kidnapper. Previously published by Carroll & Graf.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

John Harvey, Lawrence Block, Ian Rankin, Anne Perry, and Peter Lovesey are just a few of the blockbuster mystery novelists who prove, in this smartly selected paperback, that they can also shine on a smaller stage. Marcia Muller's gemlike story "The Holes in the System" pushes her usual star, Sharon McCone, to a back burner while McCone's assistant solves a case. And Rankin's Inspector John Rebus doesn't even appear in the mordant little nugget "Principles of Accounts," which begins with this gripping description of a kidnapper's work: "It began as a hobby. But then quite quickly the hobby became a career, and now he was a professional, taking a professional's care in the details of his craft..."
