Book Description

April 1, 1985
Ninja . . . that single word conjures up images of mystery and power. The ability to move swiftly and silently, to mesmerize one's victim, to strike infallibly, and then to disappear into the night--this is the legend of the ninja. These nearly sorcerous aspects of the ninja, as well as the exotic weapons they use, are the focus of The Mystic Arts of the Ninja. Its author, Shidoshi Stephen K. Hayes, is the sole American to be granted teaching credentials by the 34th grandmaster of the Togokure School of Ninjutsu in Japan. Going beyond the basic conditioning and training techniques of his best-selling Ninjutsu: The Art of the Invisible Warrior, Hayes explains the most sought after secrets of his ninja training:
  • Hypnotism: Saiminjutsu, the ninja's hypnotic powers are described and explained. Sample exercises are provided to help develop your hypnotic powers.
  • Invisibility: Stealth walking and camouflage are discussed. Hayes provides examples of how to move silently across various kinds of terrain and how to blend into your surroundings to become invisible.
  • Weaponry: The Hanbo cane, the sword, and the infamous shuriken throwing stars are ninja trademarks. Hayes fully describes their use in grappling as well as in attacking.
More than 400 black-and-white photos are used to illustrate the secrets and techniques that have been used by the ninja to surprise and outwit their foes over the past 800 years. The authenticity of Shidoshi Hayes's instruction is perhaps the most important aspect of this book: no other book represents the true ninja tradition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and authentic, August 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mystic Arts of the Ninja (Paperback)
I have read this book and it is quite good and very informative. I usually don't write reviews on books but I read the review below mine (David B. from Chiba, Japan , July 25, 1999) and I felt the need to say that this book is real. I have read a few of Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi's books and he mentions that Hayes was his first foreign student, which means David B. doesn't know what he's talking about. I'd recommend any of Hayes's books and also Masaaki Hatsumi.

4.0 out of 5 stars ok but not excellent book, September 5, 2005
This review is from: The Mystic Arts of the Ninja (Paperback)
As a practicioner of Ninjutsu, or as its now called ninpo taijutsu this is a good book if your a beginner to learn some of the basics and see some advanced stuff an ok book at best for a better buy get Hayes ninjutsu books 1-5 more info. As for the reviewer who's indorsing Ashida Kim dont waste your time or money. Kim is doing some Karate/military techniques dressed up in a black suit he is a fake i have personally seen him perform nothin remotely identifiable as Ninjutsu hes just flash and glitze. Also no Ninjutsu did not originate in China it has SOME chinese influence but it did not originate in china. Also Ninjutsu does not have a "dim mak".The striking portion of our art (dakentaijutsu) is made up of koshijutsu(nerve strikes) and koppojutsu(bone breaking attacks) no dim mak as kim would have you believe kim is a fake stay with Hayes Hatsumi or Jacki Hoba who have personally gone to Japan to train with a ninja grandmaster.period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guide to the basics., August 9, 2000
This review is from: The Mystic Arts of the Ninja (Paperback)
This book had a little of everything. How to walk quietly, how to properly hold a sword, or a rope. It demonstrates the basics of the "Hanbo" (half-staff) and the ninja-to (ninja sword). It also delves a little into the meditations, and the arts of the mind.

It's a kind of salad bar... it has a little bit of everything for everyone.
