Soul food might sound like a Southern cuisine, but this Soulfood fries his music in Native American pots and dips it in ambient sauce. On his first album, Breathe, Soulfood orchestrated an ambient-Native American soundscape deep in texture and adventurous in its electronica architecture. Since then, however, he's tapped into the gift market, with designer new age flamenco, world fusion, and meditation CDs. Something got lost in the souvenir shop, but on Mystic Canyons Soulfood, a.k.a. DJ Free, a.k.a. Gordy Schaeffer, returns to his early inspiration. Teaming up once again with Anakwad (Frank Montano) of the Ojibwe tribe on flutes and chants, Soulfood deploys euphorically melodic compositions bathed in electronic textures. As befitting his DJ roots, the disc is a seamless flow, moving from the quietly triumphal guitar strumming of "Canyon Echoes" to the deep meditation of "Thunder Song" which recalls the flute choirs of Coyote Oldman. Mystic Canyons isn't nearly as close to the edge as Breathe, but it does have some magnificent vistas. --John Diliberto

About the Artist

SOULFOOD’s DF Free is an award winning producer/composer who scored soundtracks for IMAX® Extreme and PBS/National Geographic special Condition Black. His DJ roots, along with the world’s indigenous cultures, influence his music. He has charted Billboard top 15 with Breathe & Spiritual Massage and is a guest teacher at Esalen Institute where he shows the connection between music and consciousness.

Anakwad (aka Frank Montano) is an Ojibwe elder and master flute maker who began his flute playing following interpretations of dreams by traditional elders. His music is an extension of his native roots and Mexican heritage. He has sold over 500,000 units worldwide.

Rita Coolidge is a two-time Grammy winner and multiplatinum selling artist. In addition to her solo career, she is a member of the award winning Native American trio Walela. Rita is deeply committed to the Native community and has received a Native American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Brent Lewis is a master percussionist who traveled throughout Africa to study drums and tribal ceremonies. He has performed on Oliver Stone’s JFK and three IMAX scores, and composed music for the Australian Ballet. He also shares the magic of drums through teaching workshops.

Richard Hardy is classically trained sax, flute, horns and woodwinds player who has performed with the Denver Symphony, on two IMAX films (Everest and Dolphins) and with Dave Mathews, James Taylor and the Neville Brothers. He regularly performs with the jazz groups 3rd Force and the Ultra-Kinetic Orchestra as well as the world fusion band Shapeshifters.

Fabulous! This CD takes you into another world. Great background for Tai Chi, yoga , meditation or just plain relaxation. Highly recommended. Several of my friends have purched this after hearing our copy.

I'm a massage therapist, and this CD by far is my favorite (and I have a huge collection). The rhythym is perfect for massage, and it's totally relaxing for my clients. It's very peaceful, DJ Free picked a perfect name for this album. Because it truly brings you to a mystical canyon. I love it.

I use this as background music in my Chiropractic office. It is congruent with the other music I have. It is soothing and brings a great ambiance to the office.
