Book Description

December 1, 1994
All the passion and romance and pain of love unfold in this exquisite work. "Love grew like some mystic fire mound my heart." Perhaps the greatest beauty of this book is its balance in the power of physical, motional, and unconditional spiritual love. Hundreds have asked permission to use these poems for their weddings. "Perhaps," says Kavanaugh, "life’s only tragedy is never to know a pure and unconditional love. To give such is finally to be alive, to receive such is to be as gods ... Erotic love is a much ignored sacrament and a unique contact with god."

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

James Kavanaugh was ordained and actively ministered for ten years as a Catholic Priest before attending Catholic University in Washington D.C. Working on his second doctoral degree, he wrote an article for the Saturday Evening Post, entitled, "I am a Priest, and I want to marry." The article questioned the practice of celibacy among priests. The year was 1967, the height of the sexual revolution. Although it was written under a pseudonym and even his closest friends and family were not aware of the author, it was received with such commotion and outrage, the secret would not be kept for long. Soon Simon and Schuster was calling for a book deal. Amid personal confusion, James took a leave of absence from the priesthood, packed his VW bug and headed for California to write books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wondeful poetry, January 4, 1998

This review is from: Mystic Fire: The Love Poems of James Kavanaugh (Paperback)
All of Kavanaugh's books touch my soul. "Maybe If I Loved You More" mirror's my thoughts in a marriage decaying. "There is Nothing to Tell You" shows hope for a new beginning. They are wonderful. I read and reread them. Find someone to share them with!!

5.0 out of 5 stars IN MEMORY OF JAMES, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Mystic Fire: The Love Poems of James Kavanaugh (Paperback)
As a lover of James' books; one who has all of them, I was saddened to hear of his death on December 29, 2009, in Kalamazoo, Michigan (where he was born in 1928 - 1 of 7 sons).

Be sure you get your collection current and complete - we will never have his writings again. In his memory, a life-long fan - Diane

This review is from: Mystic Fire: The Love Poems of James Kavanaugh (Paperback)
This is like my "poetry bible" - no poetry lover should be without it. And if you are looking for a way to express yourself but don't know how to do so - no one says it better than James Kavanaugh.
