5.0 out of 5 stars "The silence must be heard"
This artist will open a new chapter in your life. I reach for this CD after a long day at the office. The music is a blend of classical, new age. Deeply moving, these songs give you a moment to reflect on love and to explore your inner self. If you play piano, this is a worthy investment. Let "Mystic Harp", melt your stress, and be lifted instantly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting...
Knowing of Mr. Bell's work with the Chieftans, I purchased this disk as a gift for my wife, who plays folk harp. We were both expecting to hear more in the way of his virtuosity on the harp, but instead feel that it is overdone with too much synthesized, sterile-sounding electronic oboe, flute and strings which detract from the harp itself. If you are looking for...

5.0 out of 5 stars Most soothing music ever, December 6, 2003
This review is from: The Mystic Harp (Audio CD)
It is soothing, relaxing, regenerating collection of Music I have found. I can read while listening to this CD, I often go to sleep with the music.
I so wanted to hear Derek Bell when he was alive. The sorrow of the Chieftains is very evident. He was a good and great person in life as well as music. I found harp music too late, but we can all still enjoy Derek Bell's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem: a consumate harper, an ideal instrument, December 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mystic Harp (Audio CD)
Derek Bell, the harper of the The Chieftains, has here an album of uplifting, relaxing music in the Irish tradition. Bell is one of the great "old timers" of the Celtic harp, having performed on the instrument for many decades. Yet he brings to this disk a freshness that will delight anyone looking for both a moving experience and transcendent artistry.

On this CD, Derek plays a lovely harp made by Glenn Hill of Oregon: itself a work of art. Glenn has made harps for some of the leading harpers of the world and this harp is a joy to hear. Each harp made possesses its own soul and voice and Glenn's Crescent Moon harp is one of my favorite in all the world.

I listen to this album literally nightly: it is part of my sleep ritual and I believe that the music on it has been responsible for some of the improvements in daily functioning that I have experienced lately.

Buy this CD. You will thank yourself over and over.

What a treat you have in store for you--almost music to "die for" in the sense that you'd want this playing if you ever are down and out and want something to connect deeply to that place of goodness, quiet, calmness inside of you. This album celebrates the spirit and Donald Walters, who I met some 20 years ago at Ananda is a spiritual genius and he sings one song on this album too! This is an A+ album all the way and I'm buying it for numerous friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best gift I have ever given!, October 2, 1998

The melodies and harmonies are so beautiful. The combination of Walters and Bell is awesome. I've given this CD as a gift to over 10 people and each one has told me how much he or she loves it. My mother was recently agitated while stuck in traffic and found a tape recording of this in the car and played it. "I was instantly calmed. The harp music soothed my nerves and cheered me up!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent vocals., June 18, 2000

Some of the best vocals of any recording. Mystic Harp has a pleasent beat, but it is the powerful vocals that seperate it from similar recordings.

If you are looking for traditional Irish or Scottish-style harp performance, this would not be one of my recommendations. Instead, you may want to investigate Catriona McKay. If, however, you like music more for background which doesn't challenge your listening, then you may like this one.
