This work was translated from the Greek and demonstrated to be the invocation which were used in the Eleusinian Mysteries, with considerable emendations, alterations and additions. These hymns were originally written by Orpheus in Greek and when literally translated into English, lose much of their propriety and force. In their native tongue, they diffuse their sweets with full blown elegance and the translator has attempted to infuse some of this sweetness into the English translation. Due to the age of the facsimile we reproduced, some pages are faded or spotty, but the antiquity and beauty of the work are well worth reading.
