Book Description

November 20, 2007
Ancient writings of saints are often lost in today's world of self-help religious books. But for the saints who have traveled before us, they left a well-marked pathway to discovering a deep, authentic relationship with Jesus--one that reflects the way He lived and how He lived. In this book, authors Eric Sandras and Jason Chatraw take a look at the writings of six saints (St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ambrose of Milan, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and St. Catherine of Genoa) and show how their ancient words are still relevant to today's culture hundreds of years after they were first penned. They were mystics (people who sought to experience God daily), mavericks (people who bucked status quo), and miracle workers (people who experienced the supernatural power of God intersecting with the natural). From their well-worn path, we can learn much about faith and becoming the people God wants us to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turning a corner, May 29, 2009
This review is from: Mystics, Mavericks & Miracle Workers: A 30-Day Journey with Some Saints (Paperback)
This book has helped me with the everyday issues that can cloud up life and get us on a dreary path of mere existance, instead of the clear and concise path of knowing God's will for us and doing it. Eric and Jason have done an excellent job of extracting fundamental truths from some of the most faithful and devoted saints in history. I didn't think there was so much to learn from these people who lived so long ago, in a very different time and culture than ours. Every point was exactly what I needed to hear and it challenges me to make every minute matter for God, no matter what hard times I may be facing. This book spoke right into my life... for today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walking with the Ancients, May 2, 2008
By
This review is from: Mystics, Mavericks & Miracle Workers: A 30-Day Journey with Some Saints (Paperback)
The authors give a compulsory overview of six saints without getting bogged down in unnecessary details. The purpose of this book (according to page 90) is to "learn from their journey and find strength and insight from our own journey." The devotionals are thought-provoking and relevant. Each day gives thoughts from an ancient saint, a thought from Scripture, thoughts of others, and thoughts from one of the authors. The authors, in their transparency, succeeded in stimulating my thinking and in pushing me to consider my own love for Christ. The "thoughts of others" section in each day's devotional seemed forced and dated; if the quotes from men like Donald Trump, Malcom X, or Oracle (from the Matrix movies) had been omitted, this would've been a perfect book.
