Strategy , lots of strategy!, January 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Myth 2: Soulblighter (CD-ROM)
Myth 2 is a great real-time strategy game. It has a good story line and challenging solo player levels, and a large number of multi-player (competitive) playing options. The game is set in a quasi-medieval human-centric world familar to anyone who has ever played dungeons and dragons or read Tolkien or any other sword and sorcery fantasy literature. The story is a little less coherent or immersive than Myth: The fallen lords, but there are a number of features added to Myth 2 which make it just as (or more) enjoyable.
In the solo levels you battle the forces of evil in an epic campaign. The different missions occur in a variety of settings each with it's own goal. You get to control human soldiers and archers, berzerkers (think braveheart), dwarfs (who throw explosives), and warlocks. Your enemies include zombies, spear throwing flying souless, exploding pus corpses, tough pig beasts, giants, ghols (kind of a cross between monkeys and dogs), and other creatures.
What makes Myth so fun? Maybe the answer to that is to identify how Myth is different from the other combat & strategy games.
Firstly Myth is a "Real-Time" strategy game. There are no turns where one player makes a turn then the next player responds, everything happens in real-time - simultaneously. The battles are what Dungeons and Dragons battles would be like if you didn't have to keep rolling the dice, consulting charts and calculating numbers.
Unlike first person shooter games like Quake or Unreal, Myth puts you in charge of several units/troops at a time. You can give your troops orders independantly or have them work together, but you have to think about more than just one character, as you can have dozens of troops under your command at any one time.
Unlike combination resource building/strategy games that emphasize long-term planning and in which a single decision made early on can have disastrous consequences much later on - so that battles are more the result of how many and what types of weapons you have accumulated rather than on how good a commander you are, in Myth, the focus is on a player's strategy _in battle_ and immediately before battle.
When playing competitively against other players each player has (generally) the same mix and numbers of troops so that winning a game is not determined by who has accumulated the most toys, winning depends on using various types of units effectively, using terrain to your advantage, knowing when to fight and when to retreat, how to use troop formations, set traps, etc.
Although Bungie no longer provides the free bungie.net game server for Myth players to play with/against each other, you can still play Myth on a local network, directly with another player over the internet, or through use of one of the newer free Myth Game Servers (mariusnet.com or www.playmyth.net).
Myth 2 is very addictive fun. Myth is an old game at this point, but I would still recommend it. Die-hard fans still play the game regularly online and fans still create new competitive maps and solo missions which keep the game fresh. If you do get this game and want to play it online, you will need to download the latest update to the game which is available for free at www.versiontracker.com. [You still need to BUY the game, the free update only updates the game, it does not work on it's own] You can also find lots of Myth related info and strategy guides at the Myth Graveyard - mythgraveyard.mything.org

A bargain!, May 15, 2001
This review is from: Myth 2: Soulblighter (CD-ROM)
Having played Myth 2 (and the original Myth - The Fallen Lords) since it's release back in 1998 I still find few games today who can match the fun and mayhem that Myth 2 offers. The solo levels are fun, well designed and the story interesting and well thought out. But it's online where Myth II really shines. A wide variety of maps and game types make for intense multiplayer carnage that remains addictive even today. On top of that this game has one of the most dedicated and mature gaming communities I've ever encountered. Considering how [inexpensive] you can get Myth II for nowadays this game is a real bargain. Stay tuned for the upcoming installment in this series: Myth 3 - The Wolf Age.

The camera controls might be tricky at first, but after awhile they become the easiest thing to do, just like breathing no thought required, you just do.
People may say that Myth is limited and boring because you don't have buildings but thats a load of ****, the thing about Myth 2 is that it comes with a fully working Plugin system, fancy playing the American Civil War?
Download the Blue & Grey plugin from www.projectmagma.net
Want to play with troops from ww2, download one of the hundreds of ww2 plugins for Myth.
Myth can be everything, and is constantly growing with new plugins and expansions being created all the time.
You may need to download the latest patch for Myth 2 before you start playing online, but it's well worth it. Go to www.playmyth.net for the latest patch.
There is nothing Myth can't do, and when you find that out for yourself, you'll be hooked for life.
