Provocative title but this disease is not a myth, October 1, 2010
This review is from: The Myth of Alzheimer's (Audio CD)
In a culture that still stigmatizes people with Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases, I am disappointed that the author chose to undermine the advocacy and care work of people with Alzheimer's and their families and caregivers by casting doubt on the existence of this horrible disease. Alzheimer's is not just "brain aging" any more than blindness is "eye aging." We do not stop looking for disease modifying treatments just because diseases are complex, hard to understand, or common in the elderly. It is curious that the author casts such aspersions on the very organizations that have helped to build his career and promote the support and care of so many families. If his aim was to make a case for better care and support as he claims--rather than simply generate controversy and a new revenue stream-- perhaps he would have chosen a less incendiary title.
