The authors admonish both singles and marrieds to stop their fruitless search for a mythical "true love" and get to work instead on building relational skills that make marriage work. This is a common sense book that will make--and save--good marriages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In today world, only spiritually and emotionally strong marriages survive. The Myth Of Romance offers candid, honest advice for couples contemplating marriage. Successful marriages can be build if the relational myths of a secular, materialistic, hedonistic society are rejected. Among the most pernicious of these myths are that romantic feelings are the best test in choosing a mate, physical and emotional attraction can measure a relationship's intimacy, living together is a good compatibility check, God will protect you from painful consequences of bad choices. The Myth Of Romance tests the reader's readiness for Christian marriage, life's most intimate love and heaviest responsibility. Those already married will discover how to move ahead by building a lasting unity with their spouse. And every reader will find out how to stop a fruitless search for a mythical "True Love' and to focus instead on building the relational skills that make marriage work. -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Great insight into relationships., May 11, 1999

This review is from: The Myth of Romance (Paperback)
This book offers a wealth of insight into human relationships, both romantic and platonic. What's particularly gripping about this book is its Biblical basis. The authors aren't offering their own versions of so-called expert studies, their source is the Bible. I have personally applied many of the principles talked about in this book and have experienced a transformation in my life. I don't think this book offers another "magical recipe" to win friends and influence people, it merely lays out a vivid description of how God intended humans to relate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the only "dating" book you need, December 4, 2007

As a single Christian woman, I'm drawn to books that talk about how to prepare me for an eventual marriage. I've read MANY of these books, and this is one that I refer to (and recommend) time and time again. But be warned: It's not going to tell you how to find a man or woman, but instead, how to become first the kind of man and woman God is preparing you to be and how to love people as Jesus commands us to. A worthwhile investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars For all relationships, especially pre-marital, December 5, 2007
By
In a world of superficial relationships, this book helps men & women alike with the practicals of how to go deeper. It's biblically-based under grace and biblically solid, but it's not just for Christians. Chapter 3 is worth the price of the book, describing the elements of casual-close-intimate relationships. This book is a super guide for successful dating & pre-marital counseling, but it's also terrific for helping men & women alike overcome the competing, comparing, and conditional relating that inhibits deep friendships. It's been a life-saver breakthrough for me -- I was the poster-child of an emotionally shut down husband.
