Book Description

October 1982
Rosenberg's racial interpretation of history concentrates on the supposedly negative influence of the Jewish race in contrast to the Aryan race. He equates the latter with the Nordic peoples of northern Europe and also includes the Berbers from North Africa[1]. According to Rosenberg, modern culture has been corrupted by Semitic influences, which have produced degenerate modern art, along with moral and social degeneration. In contrast, Aryan culture is defined by innate moral sensibility and an energetic will to power. Rosenberg believed that the higher races must rule over the lower and not interbreed with them, because cross-breeding destroys the divine combination of physical heredity and spirit. He uses an organic metaphor of the race and the State and argues that the Nazis must purify the race soul by eliminating non-Aryan elements in much the same ruthless and uncompromising way in which a surgeon would cut a cancer from a diseased body.

In Rosenberg's pseudohistory migrating Aryans founded various ancient civilizations which declined and fell due to inter-marriage with lesser races. This included the Indo-Aryan civilization, ancient Persia, Greece and Rome. He saw the ancient Germanic invasions of the Roman empire as "saving" its civilization which had been corrupted both by intermixing and "Judaized-cosmopolitan" Christianity. Furthermore, he noted that the persecutions of Protestants in France and other areas as the wiping out of the last remnants of the Aryan element in those areas, a process completed by the French revolution. In contemporary Europe, he saw the northern areas that embraced Protestantism as the closest to the Aryan racial and spiritual ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nazi Views of Jews and Slavs; National Socialism as a Form of Socialism, etc., June 26, 2008
This review is from: The Myth of the Twentieth Century: An Evaluation of the Spiritual-Intellectual Confrontations of Our Age (Hardcover)
I give this book five stars solely for its historical value. Rosenberg was one of the Nuremberg defendants hanged.

There is much content in this book, and I will only touch on a few themes. Rosenberg relates his thinking to topics as diverse as the ancient Greeks, Teutonic mythology, religion (especially Christianity), papal politics, past German statesmen and philosophers, modern science, etc.

Rosenberg faults the Bible for teaching creation out of nothing, a 6,000 year-old earth, and the existence of Noah's Ark (p. 394). Unlike Hitler, who summarily dismissed Christianity as an effeminate Jewish invention, Rosenberg spends much time trying to "de-Judaize" Christianity, going as far as insisting that Jesus Christ was not a Jew. (p. 382)

The Jews-are-parasites theme of MEIN KAMPF is repeated by Rosenberg (p. 286). He also praises Emmanuel Kant for calling Jews "a nation of shopkeepers and swindlers" and Arthur Schopenhauer for calling Jews "the great masters of lies." (p. 434)

As for the Slavs, Rosenberg cites the Czechs as consisting of a Nordic-Slavic nobility and lower orders. (p. 57) This echoes the Nazi belief that all Slavic leadership, achievement, culture, creativity, etc., is produced by a thin upper crust of Slavicized Germans. There is no such thing as Slavic culture; it is all copied German culture. During WWII, Rosenberg's views on "race defilement" (pp. 373-374) were widely put into practice.

Nazism is sometimes conflated with nationalism. Actually, Rosenberg criticized it: "The old nationalism was manifoldly not sincere. It was a mere cover for large agrarian and industrial, and later, finance-capitalist, private interests." (p. 335). Genuine nationalism, according to Rosenberg, existed only when serving the needs of the Volk, and fused with socialism. (pp. 335-336, 338) In fact, Rosenberg commented: "Thus whoever wishes to be a nationalist today, must also be a socialist." (p. 336)

Indeed, there is no doubt about the fact that National Socialism was a form of socialism. In common with other Nazis (e. g., Goebbels), Rosenberg often attacked both capitalism and Communism, sometimes in the same sentence: e. g., "...bourgeois avariciousness, criminal Marxist insanity..." (p. 351) He praised Bismarck for having socialized the railways. (p. 336, 339)

National Socialism can best be understood as a racialist-socialist system that superseded all previous concepts of government, nation, etc. Rosenberg said: "Our new idea places Volk and race higher than the existing state and its forms. It declares protection of the people to be more important than protection of a religious creed, a class, of the monarchy or the republic." (p. 339)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting - could use footnotes..., January 23, 2010
I have this same edition - though a newer edition can be purchased from NS Publications (on the web at their NEW TITLES page) for $45 plus shipping. (although this edition will DEFINITELY be a collectors item, so I'd get it while it is still available!).

One may say that Rosenberg was anti-everything, but one must realize that he was a product of his time. I do agree with many things he wrote in Myth, while I disagree with other things on the basis that he was simply not fully informed... It is stated that even Adolf Hitler did not read Myth, saying that it was 'stuff nobody could understand...' True for most, but this is for the elite. Surely Hitler could have understood it, but it is a bit over-reaching when compared to Mein Kampf - which is, in my opinion, a far better book on National Socialism (when the right translation is read - which I recommend Ford translation). Note: I edited this 2nd March 2010. When I first wrote this review, I recommended the Murphy translation, until I read the Ford translation.

Rosenberg is highly opinionated and this can be extremely annoying, even to someone who appreciates the material he presents. And there are no footnotes in the work, something which could have seriously helped the reader who is not familiar with every concept or name he drops... I think a re-edit or even a re-translation would be in order someday. But for now, I am quite happy to have what I have, as it is admittedly a very rare book.

Four out of five, definitely.
