4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting folk/death/thrash release, January 20, 2012
This review is from: Mythistory (Audio CD)
1998's Mythistory is the third (and to date, final) full-length release from Dutch metal band Bifrost. I honestly had no idea what to expect when I picked this one up. I just thought it looked promising and vaguely Viking/Norse-inspired.

As it turns out, this particular Bifrost (apparently there are several metal bands with that name) plays a death-meets-thrash hybrid with some slight symphonic and folk elements. It's a pretty good mix of sounds, and brings to mind At the Gates, Carnal Forge and even Skyclad at times. The speeding riffs and breakneck rhythms are offset by just a bit of Gothenburg-style melody and the folk parts, and the vocals are harsh without really hitting that lower guttural register. Oh, and the lyrics are indeed pagan/Viking-themed.

It's nothing groundbreaking, but I'm glad I took a chance on Mythistory. If you're a fan of thrash, death and folk metal thrown together, this Bifrost album is well worth a listen.
