A Fundamental Reader Regarding Mythology,
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mythology: Tales of Ancient Civilizations (Hardcover)
In this beautifuly designed and illustrated book the mythologies of the ancient civilizations of the world are related in very readable fashion, capturing just the right amount of drama to create the feeling of reading a novel. There is a major emphasis on drawings and paintings of all eras that either directly reference particular myths or use those myths as subtle references for more contemporary depictions. The quality of research and writing is excellent. If there is one major shortcoming in this book it is only in the relatively small amount of discussion about controversial myths and the variable historical validity of myth referencing. But then what are myths if not arbitrary explanations for the mysteries that helped explain the universe before the advent of modern science? This is a fine reference book, a lovely art book, and an affordable coffee table book I would place on a list of "Books as Gifts" for the art lovers.
