5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cultural History of North Carolina's Cherokees, June 14, 2000
This review is from: Myths of the Cherokee (Native American) (Paperback)
If you are interested in American Indian culture, you'll really enjoy this book. James Mooney researched and wrote this in the late 1800s just as the Cherokee culture was in danger of dying out. He recorded their myths, legends and language for posterity. A teenaged Cherokee in North Carolina told me they use this book today in their classes. He said it was an inspiring reference, and I agree. Fascinating; the "real thing." And Mooney's life was also very interesting. There is a separate biography of that "The Indian Man."

5.0 out of 5 stars My Library, March 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My interest in genealogy has taken me back in time to a wife without a name(unknown). With no marriage records, no land records, no wills, just a brick wall. But I long to get to know my ancestress. This book from Amazon and several more from them about the Cherokee people have given me a window to catch a glimpse of this part of my ancestry.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, February 15, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Myths of the Cherokee (Paperback)
As it turns out, I realized I had another copy of this book after ordering it. Hoping that they were somehow different, I flipped through my new purchase, excited to learn more about the Cherokee people. I was very much so angered at what I found. You cannot read more than a single sentence without finding a typo. Shocked, I flipped to the beginning of the book to find out why this had happened. There, I found that the book had been printed specifically for me, and that a robot had scanned the original copy in order to print me one. The text had not been proofread at all by the time it reached me. I wouldn't normally be too perturbed, except for the fact that in a treasure like this, such an incredible number of avoidable inaccuracies is unacceptable. It is particularly unacceptable because these rampant typos threaten the integrity of the work, specifically the Cherokee-to-English transliterations. These transliterations are the essence of traditional Cherokee story telling, because the stories themselves include traditional Cherokee phrases. I could repeatedly slam my face on the keyboard and thereby type more discernible words than this "Optical Character Recognition" software. I had NEVER before felt that buying a book was a waste of money, until I made the mistake of ordering this book.
