MyVu gets even better,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Myvu Crystal Personal Media Viewer, Standard Edition (Black) (Electronics)
This is my second MyVu, as I like the clean design of the new model; also, my first MyVu is used to let other people that keep interupting me to ask about the device a chance to try it out. I travel by plane nearly daily and the MyVu allows me to catch up with news and video podcasts comfortably. I really like the improvement to the screen with this model and the clean lines of the design.
As the other review stated, I too worry if I would damage the audio cables, but in nearly daily use for the past year, I have not had a problem with my other unit. Clean design, comfortable to wear, and easy to operate...as you can tell, I love this product.

Bought the MyVu Crystal Black before a LONG international flight. Works great and screen is clearer that one would expect.
Other companies block out all outside light which is good, but sometimes someone is trying to get your attention and with the MyVu you see something out of the corner of your eye. I was worried about the outside distractions, but I kind of like it. If someone wants to make fun of you for wearing the glasses, you can catch them in the act. The weight of the glasses can begin to bother you after about 5 or 6 hours. It is bearable, but can cause some discomfort. I carry a Wall powered USB charging cable (not included) because it charges much quicker than linking to a computer. I find myself switching the charging cable back and forth from the iPod and MyVu to make sure the battery power lasts. The 2 things I would change are the ability to change the earphones. While they work great now, I fear if they break, there goes the unit. Right now it is fine though. I would also like to see a reasonably priced spare battery packs. Overall. I love the glasses and am happy with my purchase. Note, buy the hard case. I would worry that the glasses would break while traveling, but the hard case protects it much better than the soft pouch case (like you get when you buy a pair of sun glasses.)

Big Battery Problems,
This review is from: Myvu Crystal Personal Media Viewer, Standard Edition (Black) (Electronics)
First, this item said in stock, but the ship date was 50 days away. Anyway, it took 4 purchases to get a working Myvu Crystal. My first attempt on Ebay didn't work because the battery wouldn't charge. My next attempt was Amazon and their mysterious order delay. Then I just went to BestBuy with a coupon and bought one. It had the same battery problem. Further, it had apparently been returned by somebody else because the battery compartment was cracked which I bet indicates somebody trying to swap their dead battery. So I went back to BestBuy and exchanged it for a working (knock on wood) Myvu. So, two dead batteries and I bet Amazon's order problem is also due to battery related inventory trouble. It doesn't appear that replacing the battery is intended as an option, by the way, as evidenced by the cracked case.
Having said all of that I do like it and if the battery doesn't die I'll be happy with the purchase. Cool Uses: - Watching TV in bed without irritating your bed-mate with all the light from a laptop. - Watching risque material on an airplane without having to cover the screen every time there is nudity Problems: - Battery - Also seems like the volume control on the pendant doesn't work quite right, but I'll just use the IPod volume rather than return it again.

I was a bit reserved before I recieved the Crystal, but, WOW, WOW, WOW. I have no regrets. Within 3 minutes it was plugged into my PS3 and I was playing. It is awesome in every sense of the word. Very, very clear. Its like watching a 30" TV from 5-6 ft. away. Charging is easy through your USB port. In a word, AMAZING. If you have the dough, BUY IT!!!!!

Some Things to Consider Before Buying These...,
This review is from: Myvu Crystal Personal Media Viewer, Standard Edition (Black) (Electronics)
My friend let me try his. Flimsy quality - feels like the plastic will break if you open them too fast. Like many other folks, they also arrived with a dead battery that would NOT hold a charge. There are also too many cables/cords hanging down when hooking these things up to a portable DVD player, which make these quite heavy to wear and started hurting the bridge of my nose after only a few minutes.
Something else people should know - For some reason, Myvu has opted to make these with a rechargeable battery that is NON-REPLACEABLE. It took 2 emails and a phone call to Myvu to FINALLY get them to confess to this. The ENTIRE PENDANT/BATTERY PACK must be replaced ($100 + S&H), is ONLY avalable thru Myvu and is currently UNAVAILABLE as of this writing. I was told that, under the best of circumstances, the rechargeable battery will last 3-4 years. Well, according to all the reviews I'm reading here this is simply NOT the case. Since the previous "Crystal" model and the new "Crystal EV" model both use the same pendant/battery pack, one assumes Myvu rotates their stock, so these viewers are shipping with the oldest stock of pendants FIRST with a rechargeable battery life of "ZERO" to "???". Yours might arrive with a TOTALLY DEAD battery that won't hold a charge, might charge for a few months, a year, 2 years...? Can you say MORE MONEY? Looks like Myvu will be making lots of money in future revenues for replacement parts. Smart marketing! A personal viewer that will cost $400 (+ tax, + S&H) over the next year or so when just the battery needs replaced? I'LL PASS.

Absolutely Amazing,
This review is from: Myvu Crystal Personal Media Viewer, Standard Edition (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this product from a best buy abotu one month ago for use with my ipod to watch films while i travel. It has up to this point exceeded my expectiations in every regard.
The best part about this product is that you can contact MYVU and request an Audio/Video adapter (I received mine free of charge?) which you can the use to watch videos directly from ... a cpu, dvd player, any video game system that used an AV cable...the list goes on and on. When i'm not traveling I have my glasses on my bed plugged into my super nintendo or dreamcast system. The picture is perfect, the sound is well above average and the comfort level is adequate. If you are in the market for a MYVU do yourself a favor, pay the extra hundred bucks, and get the Crystal. You won't regret it.

Being a gadgets geek I just had to have these and I have to say they are great. I find myself on planes a lot and sometimes they don't show a movie, or the movie they show sucks, the idiot in the window seat does not shut his window, the screen is jacked and so on and so on. Not anymore. I can slip these on, watch my own movie with great sound and peace and quiet. It really makes for a more enjoyable flight. The screen is great, a lot better than what i thought and on par with most TV screens. If you want HD and Blu Ray type quality then this wont work for you. Not now, maybe future models. But for now I think this is one of the best purchases I have made. Its better than watching a movie on your ipod with that tiny screen or on your iphone only to learn that you have sucked all the juice out of it. They look cool as well. Battery life is great and will charge via USB. Definitely worth the money.

If you wear glasses....,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Myvu Crystal Personal Media Viewer, Standard Edition (Black) (Electronics)
I bought these for my husband for his birthday...he was so excited! But he wears glasses, farsighted with bifocals, so he couldn't see the picture clearly. I didn't know there were corrective lenses for the MyVu unit available, which I immediately purchased. The glasses come in -2, -4 and a pair that you can customize. But the "-" is meant for NEARsighted people....being farsighted, the corrective lenses didn't help. If he wears his contacts without the corrective lenses, it's slightly blury, but OK. Unfortunately, there is NO sharpness adjustment on this device, which I find suprising compared to their competitors....so if you have trouble seeing close up, you still won't be able to see it clearly with the lenses provided - you'll have to get a pair custom-made. You may be able to see it OK if you wear contacts.

I really like these video glasses. I got the Crystal universal version, plus the ipod cable separately. It works great with my 5th gen ipod, and I've also used it with my dvd player and Wii. With two young-ish kids, it's been difficult to take full advantage of my Netflix subscription without staying up until midnight (not just because of ratings, but also because the movies I like don't interest them much). Now I can watch on my virtual big screen! I've been thinking about buying the Roku player for netflix, which may add another dimension to my viewing! I'm glad I got the larger screen size. I think the smaller screen would have been very disappointing.
My only knocks on the glasses are 1) they cost more than my ipod! and 2) the connection cable from the glasses to the dongle, and the ipod cable where it connects to the ipod, do not lock in place and are easily pulled out with the slightest tug on the cable. Overall, I am happy with the product but it was very hard to justify the price to my wife.

Unreliable product,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Myvu Crystal Personal Media Viewer, Standard Edition (Black) (Electronics)
Buyer beware. Numerous units are reported as having battery problems. The set I own was sent for service once already, and in a very short period, it's in worse shape than ever. Now, it will not only fail to charge, but it is completely unresponsive to video input. Trying to get Warranty service now is impossible, since the manufacturer's website is nothing more than a generic error page. How long have I owned the set? Less than one year.
When the unit did work, the picture quality was fairly decent for something of its design. The audio left a fair bit to be desired, and the headphones could not be replaced with something better. |
