This amazing recording is a must for fans of the mallet instruments. The rhythms and timbres produced by the txalaparta (a wooden ideophone of ancient Basque origin) are pleasant enough to appeal to mainstream listeners, yet unique and challenging for those who like their music with an edge. The sound is somewhat akin to a bamboo gamelin or balophon and the varied performance locations and the quality and artistry in the performers and their guests remove any risk of redundancy. When I first purchased this, it went into heavy rotation immediately and still remains one of my favorite, if not the favorite, purchase of 2009. If you or a friend find Basque culture fascinating, that alone would make this a manditory purchase.

Indescribable,

A stunning CD that defies categorization.Based on the work of two Basque musicians who tour the world collaborating with local musicians and incorporate their traditions with the indigenous style. Every track is different and the different contributions from around the world are each stunning in their own way, but they are all well-produced, and ultimately tuneful and melodic. And if that wasn't enough, if features the best throat-singing since Baby Gramps. 9 out of 10. |
