4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious, but a bit too sugary, September 2, 2008

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from cashew juice, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found that it tastes like... juice! This is because the cashew fruit actually has two parts: the fruit and the nut. The juice is obviously made from the fruit portion and not the nut portion like I had imagined.

I would describe it as a delicious mix of apple juice and grape juice with a tiny hint of sugar cane juice. It was very refreshing and should definitely be served cold.

The packaging points out that it's made in Brazil, 100% natural, and fat free. It also claims that it may help to calm upset stomaches, sooth sore throats, protect skin from eczema and acne, and fortify immune systems. The drink seems to be marketed as one of those organic, natural drinks, and the ingredients list certainly backs up that claim with no weird chemicals aside from citric acid. The ingredients are water, cashew fruit puree, organic sugar cane juice, citric acid.

It's packed full of vitamin C at 148% of your daily value. You also get 5.1% of your daily calcium, 0.8% of your vitamin A, and 2.6% of your iron. Each box contains 140 calories with 33 grams of sugars though, which is about the same as a can of coke.

Based on its flavor, I would definitely recommend this juice. I thought it was really refreshing and really enjoyed it. If you're someone who limits sugary drink intake, keep in mind that this 11oz drink is about as sugary as a 12oz can of Coca-Cola. You probably don't want to drink too many of these in one day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all : 3.75 stars, September 5, 2008

Not knowing that a cashew is a fruit prior to trying this, I didn't know what to expect. I was expecting this to taste like a liquid cashew nut. WRONG. It's kind of like a light pear juice. It has a nice, light, sweet taste. I also decided to try a real cashew fruit. After comparing the 2, I can not give a full 5 stars because I feel that the added organic sugar cane juice kind of overpowers the cashew flavor.

But in General, it has a nice, light tropical sweet taste. I just think the added organic sugar cane juice isn't that necessary

5.0 out of 5 stars No, It Doesn't Taste Like Cashews, August 26, 2008
This review is from: O.N.E. Drink, Cashew Fruit, 11.2-Ounce Aseptic Containers (Pack of 12) (Grocery)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Having been a vegetarian for almost 21 years with a serious interest in food, I know something about nuts. I was aware that cashew harvesting involved removing the nut from its surrounding fruit, although I seem to recall that the fruit was caustic and inedible.

My memory is apparently faulty because the aptly named O.N.E. Cashew Juice is delicious. Its appearance resembles pineapple juice and the taste is reminiscent as well, albeit much less acid. The product isn't pure--it's cut with sugar cane juice, which I'm guessing both gently sweetens and thins the puree-water mixture. Regardless, the taste is nice and the texture not too thick.

11 oz. contains a modest 140 calories and is actually quite filling. Despite the plug on the label to the effect of O.N.E.'s being "a rich source of Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, and Vitamin B3," I don't see any B vitamins cited in the nutritional analysis. However, the container packs a whopping 148% of the suggested PDV of Vitamin C, plus 5.1% of calcium and 2.6% of iron (the 0.7% of Vitamin A is, the label informs us, from beta carotene--a bit too modest to tout). There's even a touch of fiber, so it's pretty obvious that this isn't a load of empty calories. The label claims various unrelated health benefits that stop just short of resurrecting the dead; I don't know about all that, but I suppose it's something to be considered.

All in all, a good product. I don't know that I'll ever find myself jonesing for a cashew juice, but I'd certainly buy it if I were thirsty and it was staring me in the face, plus given its mild favor, it would make a great base for smoothies. There are lots of exciting things happening in food today (Slow Food, American artisanal cheese, and heightened awareness of high-end tea, just for starters), as well as irritating efforts by some to get "cutesy" with recipes and ingredients. This current trend of introducing unusual fruits, e.g., Bon Dia's ultra-rich, liqueur-like blend of açai and cocoa fruit (and BTW, it's pronounced "ah-sah-EE'," with the accent on the last syllable, not "uh-sigh"--don't be mislead by Tropicana's deplorable lack of research into the proper pronunciation of its products) is one of the good ones, as long as the fruits are healthful and not tampered with too much in processing. This one tastes like a winner and I can sincerely recommend giving it a try.
