4.0 out of 5 stars A Nars Addict Confesses..., May 9, 2004
By
Svaadball (El Segundo, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NARS Duo Eyeshadow (Misc.)
I was first introduced to NARS at a time when I generally did not buy makeup. I was a wash-n-go kind of girl. However, it really only took one duo before my heart was pledged to NARS cosmetics. I didn't give it five stars because I really hate the price.

These duos are definitely expensive, but they are that partly because you simply won't find these color combinations anywhere else. If you are the type of woman who loves to experiment and try new looks, or if you have a good eye for color, then this is the line for you. Even if you don't go for some of the more unusual combinations, NARS has a few very nice neutral combos with a more updated feel (i.e., less matte and more subtle shimmer) than some other lines.
NARS eyeshadows (both duos and singles) tend to have the same silky, sheer quality, no matter what the color. That having been said, the dark burgundy you see in the (I think it's New York) pan will go on your eyelid as a sheer burgundy; the black blue-green in Cleo will show up on your eyelid as a sparkly greenish-grey. Any of the very black Night-single series will show up as either silver-toned grey sparkles, gold-toned grey sparkles, or red-toned grey sparkles. This having been said, do not be afraid to try some of the more unusual-looking duos in this line. You will be surprised.
This sheer quality works to advantage in some of NARS' combos, but it works against them in others. Sheer color does offer more control during application, but it can sometimes feel like you're working too hard to get the right shade of black. For a deeper black, I would try another line (perhaps MAC).
The lighter colors in the combos are great for highlighting and all-over coverage, and even not-so-skilled hands can produce the desired "natural" look (except better). Something about the tones in these colors make them wearable by many different skintypes: my best friend, a freckled, cool-skinned blonde, can wear nearly any color I can (I have warm olive skin, with dark eyes and hair). Application has everything to do with it.
The argument can be made that some other lines, like MAC, for example, makes just as many if not more colors, and aren't quite as expensive. This may or may not be true. What attracts me to the line, besides the cool colors and the cute packaging, is that NARS eyeshadows are easy to apply and control, and that their colors, while sheer, remain true. That is to say (with the exception of the black-based colors mentioned above, which is a common problem in ANY line) that what's gold in the pan will be gold on your skin, albeit a sheerer gold than what's in the pan. Gold. Not yellow, or orange, or green. Gold. This is what makes me keep coming back to NARS.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Colors, August 8, 2006
This review is from: NARS Duo Eyeshadow (Misc.)
I recently decided to update my makeup collection and splurge on some higher-end items rather than keep buying the cheap stuff that doesn't work well. I visited Sephora and fell in love with the Nars Duo Eye Shadows. The colors are unmatched and can be very bold. I looked around the store for a good hour or more and couldn't find any other eye color I loved more.

In Sephora, the salespeople were wearing one color on the inner half of their eyelids and the other on the outer half. This look was fun and striking. I, however, wear one color on my eyelid and the other along the outer half of my browbone, a little below the eyebrow.

I'm a caucasian brunette with light-olive skin and brown eyes. The combo I couldn't live without was Blade Runner (gives both depth and dramatic color to your eyelids). Both the colors are shimmery. They're also darker than they appear here; they have more black in them.

I have found them to crease a little, so an eye-shadow base, such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, might also be a wise purchase.

I'm a makeup addict. Alot of women say they are, but they aren't.I wear makeup to have fun.I'm constantly digging for the wild and unusual. I love these compacts because the powder is so smooth. There are alot of great color combinations; however, there are alot of boring "Clinique" like colors. You shouldn't waste your money on Nars when you can buy a nude brown from Clinique or even Covergirl for alot less. I'm just here to testify the greatness of the "Rated R" duo. The vividness of the gold shimmer spiked chartruese is amazing. The peacock blue with its electirc blue microglitters lights up the eyes.It is the most glamorous compact of all time. So, if you feel the need to be an addict this is the duo for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll Never Use Another Shadow!!!, November 12, 2007
By
This review is from: NARS Duo Eyeshadow (Misc.)
Nars eyeshadow is exquisite and I've purchased many a shade. Allow me to explain why it is such a love of mine:

1) Rich, gorgeous pigment with a very impressive color pay off.

2) You can get it wet! If you dip your brush in a bit of water and then wiggle it in the shadow (think watercolors) then you can use it as a liquid liner. I highly recommend this.

3) They last a long time.

My favorite color in the duo format is Divine (deep warm brown and brilliant magenta). I use the brown with an angled brush for my eyebrows and the magenta makes my green eyes look ULTRA green. Madrague has some really soft colors which are good for everyday.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased the Misfit version of this eyeshadow, and -- Sephora ordering snafus aside -- I love it. The colour of the green shadow is unlike anything I've seen, and the pigmentation is really rich. I took one star off because the bone colour doesn't really do anything for me plus there's no applicator. Regardless, this is a standout eyeshadow product that Nars can be proud of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dramatic combo, June 22, 2006
This review is from: NARS Duo Eyeshadow (Misc.)
I own just about every color imaginable for eye shadows...mute, shimmering, pealized in cream, tube, pencil, limited edition...you name it. There is not enough space on my table. Yet, I find NARS shadows irrisistable. They certainly have unexpected colors. I recently bought ARCTIC which is shown here as bright silver and ruby. However, the actual product did not match the colors shown here. It has a gun metal gray color..dark shimmery silver, and dark wine almost purplish color. Pigments of ARCTIC are intense and it's more mute/reserved than flirty. Would go well for a woman with a whip in her hand. The texture is velvet. It glides smoothly and stays put. You get what you paid for...quality. Looking forwards to try other colors.

This is a great product. The kuala/lumpur eyeshadow compliments my skin tone perfectly( honey brown :-) )and i have been wearing it more than my other shadows. I also love the non-silicone primer lotion. It's great for oily skin and makes any makeup look flawless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makeup lover, February 28, 2006
This review is from: NARS Duo Eyeshadow (Misc.)
I am so picky when it comes to finding the right color, and the right eyeshadow that will stay on. I was so excited to get to try the famous brand Nars, and the color duo "Rated R" is the one that I had purchased. The price sucks for $30, and I thought the two colors would look silly together. I applied the yellowish color over my entire lid and close to my browline, and used the darkish purple/blue color to line. It looked very different, and seemed to open my eyes up a bit. I would recommend wearing this on a date or going out, but not to work since the colors are so extreme.

I'm glad sephora has a website to order these brands b/c I live in a small town, no where near a fine department store that carries these brands.

I have the NARS duo eyeshadow in Brumes. The product is velvety smooth, easily blendable, and highly pigmented. NARS has a large variety of colors to choose from. While some of them are neutral, most of them are vivid and bold, so if you're not a fan of intense eye makeup, you should probably look elsewhere. However, you can have a lot of fun playing with these colors. The Brumes shades are a deep charcoal gray and a dark, shimmery grayish-blue. I love them, but they're super dramatic, so consider yourself warned.
