5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous product
I have several of these and love them because they stay on forever. This lip pencil can be used alone or with a gloss over it. The product applies easily, even with red colors going on evenly and staying on for several hours. This product is not messy, and it easily fits into the smallest of handbags or even a pocket. 2.0 out of 5 stars Hate it!
I love NARS but hate this product. Every time I try to sharpen it the whole tip always breaks off and gets stuck in the sharpener. Then because its so soft I have to scrape it out, what a mess! I love the color and the way it feels on, but I feel I don't get my moneys worth when I can't even sharpen it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but a great matte, November 5, 2009
By
It was very painful to spend this much on a lip pencil, but I really wanted to try something that could double as lipstick. I have a pretty thin upper lip and its so hard to apply color and not end up looking like a clown. Have to admit that this is one of those cases where you really do get what you pay for. The texture is extremely smooth and moisturizing, easy to apply. I love the fact that its matte without being drying. No idea what the current fascination is with super shiny lips..and while I am in my 30's and try to remain current, I prefer something that will be noticeable without the dripping wet look

Overall a really nice product, but be warned the colors are truly vivid (a good thing)..but as stated, I'm a little on the conservative side so when I received my pencil (Cruella)..the really bright red was a bit shocking to this scaredy cat..but honestly it doesn't stop me from using it almost daily because its probably the best blue - red that I've ever worn. I just tone the color down by applying just a dash of of one of my other darker lipsticks. Works like a charm.

WIll definately buy again, maybe try another color.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, January 9, 2007

If you like the look of matte lip color, this is for you! It's not dry as many matte lip colors can be and the crayon form makes it a snap to apply. I found this after Clinique stopped making their "Chubby Stick" line, if you're also looking for a replacement, look no further!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pricey, but excellent, August 17, 2009

I am not hugely into makeup, but I've always absolutely loved the look of 1950s pin-up style red lips. After a while of poking around and getting terrible shades of red that made me look more like Bozo than a blonde that gentlemen would prefer, I finally went to a makeup store for help. I told the attendant what I was after, and she immediately pointed me to NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella.

Since I was at a store I got to try before I bought, and I was floored. Finally, a true deep red that flattered my face rather than clownized it. If you are after the striking, dangerous, sexy femme fatale look, you can't get any better than Cruella. It's also very kind to teeth, whitening them rather than yellowing as some red lipcolors are apt to do.

Not only this, but it's easy to apply. As I mentioned before I'm no lipstick guru, and part of my makeup woes was attempting to put lipstick on my lips rather than my chin. As a soft lip pencil rather than a stick, application is a breeze. No lip brush required. I wear it with lipliner below, but I could see it being used as a base with a creamier stick on top, as well. Being pencil it doesn't bleed much, but I do find it useful to apply a little concealer around my lips to make a very defined lipline. I prefer the matte look for daytime use, but slicked over with clear or colored gloss it's great to hit the town with.

I put four stars rather than five mostly for the price. It's definitely a splurge, as far as lip color goes. Not to mention, you have to buy the NARS brand sharpener with it because the pencil is too fat for virtually any other sharpener on the market. Another downside is that it comes off very easily when I eat, but that's a common malady with lipcolor. Application is so easy that putting it back on is not a problem.

I do highly recommend this product. It's expensive, but (especially because I chose striking red) since it's the centerpiece of my makeup routine now, I think it's worth the money.

Though, it would be nice if it was about ten dollars cheaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best lip color, PERIOD., November 27, 2010

I first read about NARS Cosmetics in an internet article (maybe from Allure?) - one of those "best beauty finds" stories. It mentioned the NARS Matte Lip Pencil. The recommended color was "Roman Holiday" so I ordered one from the company. I was truly surprised! It's just a big, fat, lip crayon (NOT a liner). Very sturdy, and the color glides on and covers like lipstick, but has a velvety texture like...well, almost like ChapStik. It will last for many hours and DOES NOT "pill" like lipstick (which I have grown to hate over the years). The ingredients must be gentle because my lips feel soft even after the color has worn away. The "Roman Holiday" color is a shiny, pale pink. I decided to try a different color (darker) so I ordered "Sex Machine." Nice color, but too "mauve" for me, no shine. These pencils are a MUST-HAVE for any gal's make up bag. And NARS customer service is one the best EVER to work with! Yes, they may be a little pricey, but I think it's worth it.

I did read a review from someone who gave this product a low rating because they couldn't get the pencil sharpened. NARS sells a multi-product sharpener ($6) that sharpens 3 or 4 of their different pencils. The wrap of the Matte Lip Pencil is VERY thick, and must be sharpened slowly or it will be ruined. Keep this in mind when it's time to sharpen your pencil. And don't forget to remove the adapter that's stuck in the hole for the lip pencil!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Manufacturing, October 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought the Dolce Vita and Cruella colors. While the shades themselves are fine, the lipsticks are definitely not worth the price. I should have paid more attention to reviewers who complained of the tip breaking off in the sharpener. No matter what sharpener I use, the tip always breaks off. After a few tries, the whole cylinder of pigment becomes detached from the pencil. My "Dolce Vita" is now down to a stub and I have barely used it -- most of the color has gone in the trash. Save your money -- the shades are pretty, but not anything special. I'm sure you can find them at a drugstore -- at a fraction of the price and hassle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Certainly doesn't last all day!, November 25, 2007

The lip pencil looks and feels wonderful.. It was advertised as long lasting, which is why I ordered it. I'm lucky if it lasts 2 hours. I like to put lipstick on once and be done with it, not have to re- apply every hour. Definitely not worth the $30.00 (with Shipping) that I spent.
