Awesome!, August 14, 2005
This review is from: NARUT0 (Audio CD)
Originally, I got the first 2 OSTs after just starting to watch the anime because I absolutely loved the music in it. Now, after having been an avid fansub viewer for some time, I have realized how much the first 2 OSTs missed. So I went ahead and bought this when it was released. This CD covers a bunch of the later themes in the anime, which many people were hoping for in it.
(These are the track names translated to English)
1. Beautiful Wild Green Beast - (8/10) - The CD starts out with some awesome Rock Lee action music. It's got a bit of a country-style kick to it, but it still retains its rock base and keeps it throughout the whole song.
2. Sakura Season - (7/10) - This song is a quiet and relaxing one. It has some of the traditional Naruto-song feel and sound to it, although it has been updated with happy bell sounds and keyboards.
3. Fake - (8/10) - This is the song that people have come to associate with Shikamaru. It's a relaxing tune that keeps you interested with it's unique style of oriental music blended with techno. I've had sessions where I'de play this song 9 or 10 times in a row.
4. A Crisis After Another - (6/10) - This music is played often in scenes with Gaara. I like the rocky parts of it, but the xylophone runs get a little annoying after a bit.
5. Rock Lee's Theme - (8/10) - This almost seems like a varation of Track 1. It is played in the same key, has that country-kick to it, but it still rocks out. It doesn't have quite as much of a battle-feel to it, though.
6. Dance - (10/10) - I love this song. It has a majestic, almost African plains sound and feel to it. It is full of energy, while it never over-exerts it onto the listener. This is one of those songs that will put any listener into a good mood.
7. Ultimate Secrets - (10/10) - Ahh, the first really awesome battle tune. This is like a blended combo of Track 1 and Track 6. It rocks hard while keeping a cool majestic tone to it.
8. I'll Do It Right! - (x/10) - It's pretty much a 12 second intermission. No real need to rate.
9. Oh! Student and Teacher Affection - (7/10) - A nice cool-down track. It's like a slow surfer tune written with sadness. A nice tune to relax to.
10. Avenger - (9/10) - This track has counter-melody written all over it. It starts a single pattern, then another pattern comes in a few seconds later, then another pattern, until you have this amazingly complex (but not messy) sound. This song is a tense one, like when you see hear it in the show, you know something is about to happen. I like it.
11. Heavy Violence - (10/10) - YAY! This has to be one of my favorite tunes in the show. It has the classic "see, saw, huh!" voices, while playing a fusion of rock music, oriental instruments, and an orchestra sounds. An instant favorite.
12. Sarutobi - (10/10) - One masterpiece after another. My all-time favorite Naruto tune, this mixes bass-loaded rock music with the classic Japanese flute, and it blends into a wonderfully-made battle tune that leans towards the good side.
13. Hokage - (7/10) - A nice celebration-style song. It has the orchestra back with the "see, saw, huh!" voices again, and a little electric guitar in there. It starts out a little slow, as it follows a very energetic song.
14. Grief and Sorrow - (8/10) - Of course, Naruto has its down songs too. This song blends a sad melody of piano and violin into a beautiful song. Any piano player that likes Naruto would love it.
15. Jiraiya's Theme - (9/10) - This song gets better as it goes. It starts out like a comical wake-up call with some tomtoms and the plucked strings, then the guitars come in after a little bit, then it just totally rocks out with the orchestra and the driving beat of the drums.
16. Ripple - (7/10) - This song is one that often played in the show. It is a driving rock beat backed by a wealth of sound effects. It brings back memories as it sounds a lot like it could have fit in with OST 1 quite well.
17. Swaying Necklace - (8/10) - This is another sad song. It combines an acoustic guitar with some soft synthesizer sounds. This is a very musical piece that is written well and provides a lot of mood.
18. Bunta - (7/10) - This is kind of like Jiraiya's Theme, except slowed down. It has a good orchestra with a nice rock beat and guitars, combined with several different sections of music which make this a good variety song.
19. Tea Country - (9/10) - This song is purely oriental. It has a calming, yet adventerous nighttime feel to it. It is another that I have played 9 or 10 times in a row.
20. Sneaking Nightmare - (8/10) - This was always one of my favorite songs in the anime, but it is much shorter than I wish it would be. It's a slower song that has some wicked sounding gong/cymbal effects with some heavy distortion music.
21. The 5th's Fight - (10/10) - I love this song. It is a fast song that consists of a happy, but "aware-ish" theme. It has some cool sounding keyboard effects combined with with strong guitars and drums, and they blend to make a very good listening experience.
22. Hero - (8/10) - This is the late turning point of the CD. This song is entirely orchestra with the exception of a couple sound effects in the middle, and it has a very "Pomp and Circumstance" sound to it. It fits well with classic Naruto themes, and sounds like a victory tune.
23. Those Who Inherit The Will of Fire - (9/10) - Definitely a great CD ender. This is like Naruto's theme except rearranged by an orchestra. Another happy victory-style sound, it ends strongly and will satisfy about any of the Naruto fans out there.
Overall, I was very satisfied with this CD. It is a more rock-themed CD that doesn't have as much of the classic Naruto sound, but it is still awesome. It is still missing a few themes, some of them early themes, but hopefully they will be covered in an OST IV. I say stop reading this review and buy the CD!

I shall now impose my musical views on you. (Aren't you psyched!?), April 24, 2006

This third Naruto soundtrack R-O-C-K-S out in comparison to its predecessors. The most blindingly obvious example is track 12, "Sarutobi", as it's almost exactly a vocal-less version of Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon". I'm not sure how to feel about that. Impressed perhaps? I'd feel better about the rip off-ishness if the track listing had it stated "Sarutobi (Tribute to Ozzy)" or something. Oh well.
Beautiful Green Wild Beast, Rock Lee's Theme, Jiraiya's Theme, and Bunta are also pretty rocking. Only Jiraiya's Theme really makes an effort to have the Naruto Sound (the beginning with all those weird sounds).
Sakura Season is an A-effort for its achievement in mood. Light, skipping, bouncing, laughing kind of stuff.
"Hokage" is a melancholy-invoking giant on the cd. (I may be spoiling...) For the watchers of the anime, the eponymous title might as well be "The Death of the Hokage".
The other giant is "Grief and Sorrow". Piano. Nuff said.
The cd ends with "Those Who Inherit the Will of Fire". It has a total graduation vibe to it. At times, it may get a bit too cheerful/look-to-the-future-with-bright-eyes, but is still a well-made song.
[Oh, and all songs that I haven't mentioned all suck!] So, let's do the math. One, two, three........ that's nine songs that I have wrote about- and subtracted from the total, 23... that equals............................................. kind of a rip off. I'm not saying to go pirate the songs, but. Eh. I'm not your boss so do what you want. But maybe this review helped a bit in your decision?
