Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6 -Three well-illustrated and readable titles. Doeden opens with a description of Ryan Newman's spectacular 2003 crash at Daytona and goes on to describe other famous wrecks, including Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash in 2001. History covers the formation of the stock-car racing organization in 1949 through the present, describing the cars, significant races in NASCAR's history, and the importance of corporate sponsorships for the sport. Subsequent sections cover developments in safety equipment, the causes of wrecks, and how crashes spur new safety innovations. Racing describes a typical pit stop and each crew member's role; the job of spotters; and the safety issues, training, and practice that go with being part of a race team. Schaefer's writing is most effective, but all three books present their topics clearly and accurately. Attractive color photos will delight fans. These titles are a step up in accuracy and appeal from Jeff Savage's The World's Fastest Stock Cars (Capstone, 2003).-Jeffrey A. French, Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, Willowick, OH
