Cold Weather & Mountain Training We head to Alaska to participate in extensive cold weather and mountain training. Survival skills in harsh conditions are taught along with rock climbing and mountaineering skills, rope bridge building and use among other things. Military TV This is one of the earliest trials of portable TV cameras in combat conditions. The cameras and cameramen are put thru their paces to test the feasibility of such an undertaking. The backpack unit looks heavy and is bulky attached to a too large portable hand-held unit that broadcasts black & white images back to a commander. Mountain Warfare This is a more in depth look at preparing the soldier for mountainous terrain. Light Plane Duty The light plane is under-appreciated. Its duties range from carrying mail, to spotting enemy, to general observation duties, photo recon and ferrying brass here and yon. There is a lot more these planes do than is first imagined. The L-19 and L-20 are shown in this vignette. Lots of flying L-19 footage. Struggle Pit How do you break a new soldier from being shy or passive? What if he was brought up to not invade other people's personal space or touch someone without their permission? You throw them in the struggle pit along with 65 other soldiers for a free-for-all to see who is the last soldier standing in the pit. MPs in Post WWII Germany MPs have several duties to perform in post WWII Germany. Patrolling the streets, patrolling the water ways, acting as guards for children of U.S. Service Personnel and dealing with the local German Police are just a few of their duties. This is a closer look into the day of an MP in an area surrounded by the enemy. A portion of each sale is donated to support the National Archives.
