I have been "married to the military" for 17 years. My husband is a traditional "M Day" Guardsman and in addition to his regular drill weekends and AT, he spent 10 months in Iraq. This book covers all the basic information a Guard spouse needs to know. The author breaks down military complexities and presents material in a straightforward and fun way. I wish I would have had this before and during my husband's deployment. The deployment chapter presents the perfect plan for Guard families. The author understands that although there are resources available, Guard families often go it alone.

I'm not a National Guard wife but I most certainly represent thousands of Army wives on Army Wife Network. My business partner and AWN cofounder, Starlett Henderson, is a National Guard wife. I learned very quickly in building a business with her that there was much for me to learn about the National Guard life. You wouldn't think that there was a difference between Active Duty and Guard but coming from this AD wife - there is - and frankly, the Guard has it a lot harder in my opinion. Not only did I learn more about the National Guard and the resources that support them from Mary's book, I also gained a new found respect and perspective. This book is a MUST HAVE for EVERY National Guard/Reserve family. Mary did a fabulous job of addressing everything from the history, rank, to the social and family programs. HOOAH!

My wife is an officer in the Army Reserves based in Illinois and has served in the Reserves ever since graduating college, 7 years go. As difficult as any deployment is... ours was relatively unique as we got engaged 2 months before she deployed and were married 3 months after she returned. She served a 12 month tour in Iraq in 2009-2010 at the US Embassy and our experience was a full of every emotion you can imagine.

This book is particularly useful to those new to military life. Even though my wife is in the Army Reserves, the book explains the different events that military families attend and outlines a very unique plan for getting support during deployments. Being a not yet official "spouse" this was highly educational and helpful in assisting me navigate all of the resources at my disposal while my fiance was deployed.

A must read for any military spouse or soon to be spouse!

I am about half way through and I am really glad I got this book. Being a new military girlfriend I needed to study up on how things work. This book is well written and is full of helpful and useful information. I definitely suggest it to those that are new to the military/national guard life and want to understand a little more how it all works.

I heard the author of this book on a local radio program and purchased it for my Kindle. Although I'm not "married to the military," my best friend's husband is a National Guardsman who will deploy to Afghanistan at the end of the month. I wanted to have a greater understanding about what he does--and the type of support his family will need during their nine month separation. The book is well written and each chapter is self-contained. This means the reader can read the chapters that are of greatest interest first and come back to the others as needed. I read the Deployment chapter of this book and realized how hard it can be for Guard families. They don't live in military communities and, thus, don't have a built in support structure that understands the deployment process. I also realized that there are a lot of things friends and family members can do to provide support--even if they live in a different state. I expected this book to be a slow read but was surprised at how interesting it was even to a "civilian" reader. This book is a perfect gift for any Guard Spouse, parent, family member or friend.

As a National Guard spouse, I must say that it is about time we get a book for us! It can be very frustrating within the community to find resources and support that gears towards what we go through. This book is not only filled with information and resources helpful to those spouses new to this life, but also life experiences that Mary shares with us. As a professional writer, I recommend this book to all National Guard spouses and soldiers. A must read!
