Why did NATO destory their infrastructure?!, August 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
This book is E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T. I was blown away by NATO's 'humanitarian' bombing campaign that deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure needed for everyday life -- such as water supply and electricity. Thousands of innocent civilians in Serbia died under NATO bombs, and tens-of-thousands more were injured. Now, the winter is coming and Western countries offer no financial assistance to repair what they destroyed; the result then being thousands of more deaths to come. And our mission was to protect 'human rights'? What about the human rights of these innocent civilians? The hypocrisy drove me to explore why NATO was trying to destroy this little country. This book sums up what I found in my own research. The objective was exactly what NATO targets accomplished. To destroy Yugoslavia's economy so they would HAVE TO succumb to Western 'reforms'. The book also illustrates point 2. These reforms are not about democracy, since all leaders in Yugoslavia are democratically elected and minorities have rights to read, speak, and be educated in their own language. The reforms are to make the country into a colony to be fully dependent on Germany and the United States for its very survival. The vision of my so-called 'democratic' government, and Germany, is to create a sphere of influence in the world -- where-as German and American citizens are at the center, making the most money. 2nd in line are our junior partners who still prosper moderately, but are dependent upon us for basic essentials. And then finally, we have the non-Western countries, which include Eastern Europe and all the former Soviet Union. They will live hand-to-mouth, if even allowed that much, working at virtually slave wages in order to keep our flourishing economies alive. And if they don't comply with these 'reforms', then they will 'be punished' as Yugoslavia was. One of the most interesting parts of the book is about the role of media in shaping our views of Yugoslav conflicts. It notes that our American culture has less and less of a common sense of identity to be replaced by materialism. Our common-culture is whether we wear the same kind-of shoes, or live in the same affluent neighborhoods. Americans as a result, are in a perpetual state of isolation, with wealth being perceived as the only way to be a valued part of our society. Thus the cycle is completed. The market demand in the United States will continue to flourish as long as we believe that our value in society is determined by what we own.

EXCELLENT EXPOSE OF WHY U.S. IMPERIALISM IS BOMBING, May 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
This book is timely. The U.S. and its NATO underlings/allies are bombing the hell out of the sovereign nation of Yugoslavia under the absurd pretense of "protecting human rights." The reality--that it's a war to crush the remnants of socialism and to gain control over this strategic region--is explained in this book. The articles describe very eloquently the history of how the U.S. engineered the breakup of Yugoslavia and promoted divisions among the nationalities. Reading the book, you understand where the so-called Kosovo 'liberation' army would have come from--a creation of the U.S. CIA terrorists, not a genuine liberation movement. Many of the articles are written by activists leading the anti-war movement in the United States, including organizers with the International Action Center, which issued the call for the June 5 march on the Pentagon to demand an end to the bombing of Yugoslavia. Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who has courageously turned on his former colleagues in the government, also contributed. Others include Serbian, Jewish and other Yugoslav writers, historians and activists.

LAND OF THE FREE OR HOME OF THE CAPITALISTS?, August 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
"Nato in the Balkans" gives the best and most convincing explanation for the U.S.-led NATO attack on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It documents the historical root of the present conflict which points to the Clinton White House. Yes, even Democrats can be vicious warmongers in the land of the free. The book enlightens. After reading it, you understand why Serbs and Roma people are now being ethnically cleansed from Kosovo under the "watchful eye" of NATO and KFOR forces. The economic motivation of the capitalist class, which the politicians in Washington represent in our great democracy, is revealed, with plenty of documentation in this very excellent piece of work. I'd really give it six stars, if I could.

GOOD ANTIDOTE FOR "FREE PRESS" DECEPTIONS, July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
Just finished "Nato in the Balkans," which I borrowed from a friend who recommended it highly. After reading this book, I realized that I must have it in my own library. It would be an invaluable addition to anyone's collection. This work details how the U.S. instigated conflict between the different nationalities of the former Yugoslav republics for the purpose of dismembering that once unified multinational country. And that the reason for this is fundametally for economic gain. After reading this wonderful piece of scholarship--and in light of the savage US/NATO attack on Yugoslavia--I came to understand what big hypocrites and liars there are on Capitol Hill, in the White House, and at the State Department. I now understand why the Pentagon and NATO exist--that is, to keep the poor and oppressed from rebelling against the horrible conditions of their lives. Just as how they stir up racism in the U.S. to keep us divided, they also seek to crush any country that has unified its various nationalities. After reading this book and witnessing the murderous and criminal bombing of Yugoslavia, one cannot help but become totally disenchanted with what the U.S. is supposed to be about ("freedom, democracy and human rights??") Nato in the Balkans is one book that everyone should obtain for her/his library.

the truth that the mainstream media will not tell you about, May 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
wow! while i have some differences of opinion with the international action center, this book makes it clear that the real source of the problems in yugoslavia are not solely, or even mainly, the product of milosevic's policies. milosevic is a reactionary nationalist, but he is no different than the fascists who the US supported in Croatia and Bosnia. the book makes it clear that the western powers do not care about human rights -- policy in the balkans was expressly designed for the purpose of destabilizing the region so that America/NATO could impose capitalism on the region. among the shocking revelations: 1. America and UN and IMF policy was expressly designed to destroy the economy of the former Yugoslavia. Higher-ups in the US government knew this would cause ethnic hatred to flare up. 2. Ethnic hatred was virtually unknown under Tito. While his system was flawed, the fact that everyone had a job, everyone ate, everyone had health care, etc. naturally made people contented and served to diminish national chauvinism. 3. The US trained the Croatian army and oversaw their "operation storm" -- a brutal exercise in ethnic cleansing which saw the expulsion of some 200,000+ Serbs. 4. The Bosnian Government is 100% politically and economically controlled by the NATO powers. it is a colony in every way. i cant summarize the whole book. while i do have some problems with the particular positions of the group that publishes the book, i strongly recommend this book. you will immediately understand that cnn, nbc, cbs are all BS after reading this book.

A vital tool for understanding the US/NATO war on Yugoslavia, May 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
"NATO in the Balkans" is a must for anyone who seeks the full truth about the US/NATO war against Yugoslavia. Tired of the CNN version of reality? Tired of the lies and half-truths? "NATO in the Balkans" is the best antidote for what has been passing as "objective" journalism. It shows, in a fully documented scholarly way, how the war against Yugoslavia has its roots in the desire of the U.S., and its NATO partners, to dominate the world economically--that is, to expand capitalist exploitation globally. This is what's behind the expansion of NATO--a cabal of right-wing militarists who became even more emboldened with the break-up of the Soviet Union. This magnificent book balances the lop-sided, ahistorical view of the conflict being pushed by the big-business media. It talks about the tens of thousands of Serbs, for example, who were "ethnically cleansed" from their homes in the Krajina region of Bosnia, with hugh numbers dying during the NATO-backed expulsion. It exposes many of the atrocities allegedly committed by Serb forces as being carried out by groups aligned with the U.S. to justify intervention. The book documents the source of the bloody conflict in the Balkans, which was instigated by the U.S. and Germany. How many people have heard about "Foreign Appropirations Law 101-513" passed by the Congress in 1991? Well, "a section of this law suddenly cut off all aid, credits and loans from the U.S. to Yugoslavia within six months. The law also demanded separate elections in each of the six republics that make up Yugoslavia, requiring State Dept. approval of election procedures and results before aid to the separate republics would be resumed," wrote author Sara Flounders in a chapter entitled "Bosnia tragedy: The unknown role of the Pentagon." In addition, "only forces that the U.S. State Department defined as 'democratic' would receive funding," wrote Flounders. This is neo-colonialism at its worst! It was the classic ploy of divide and conquer. The law was, in fact, the spark that ignited the civil war in Yugoslavia that led to the breakup of that multi-national country--one that had been peacefully united for decades under socialism--a system that the U.S. must now seek to fully crush in Europe--for starters. A simple review cannot describe the treasure trove that is "NATO in the Balkans." I have already purchased, for friends and co-workers alike, at least ten copies. Do yourself a favor, come into the light of independent thought and scholarship. Get yourself a copy soon.

Finally, January 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
Finally, there is a book which successfully and impartially points in the right direction when it comes to the causes of Yugoslav conflict. Finally, we have a chance to name the newest form of colonialism that was introduced by Western powers in order to expand their sphere of influence. Greed and colonization were the motives behind attempts to destroy one independent nation, Serbian. I hope this is only the first book of truth of many to come.

Wake up Amerika, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NATO in the Balkans: Voices of Opposition (Paperback)
Nato in the Balkans was such an interesting, information-filled book that helped so tremendously in clearing the cobwebs of corporate media cleansing, that I finished the book in record time. It is well written, very clear, documented to the hilt. It exposes how the U.S. government (and Germany) stirred up ethnic rivalry in the Balkans so that they could have a pretext for intervening. It was a coldly calculated plan to take over the area, in a move towards the oil wealth of the Caspian Sea. The U.S. and its NATO allies don't give a hoot about human rights, not here in the U.S. or elsewhere. But this is the new cover. Before these imperialist wars were fought for "freedom and democracy." Now it's supposed to be about human rights. Well, these warmongers might as well be talking abount humming mites, or humid nights; they couldn't care less about the human rights of anyone. It's all about corporate greed and the need for the capitalist system to keep expanding or face collapse. The disintegration of the former Soviet Union--which the U.S. also helped to engineer--only emboldened the warmongers in Washington and at the Pentagon, along with their junior partners in Europe. Come out of the deep sleep of U.S. consumer society. Open your mind to what's going on in the world. Make the links between imperialist war abroad and reactionary domestic policies, like the gutting of the Welfare system. Guess who's paying for the Pentagon war machine? It ain't the Rockefellers or the Mellons. Pick up a copy of Nato in the Balkans asap, and tell your friends about it. It's like a breath of fresh air. And in the rancid atmosphere of north America, we all need it.
