Composts just as promised April 12, 2010
By KLMinMN
This is a very well-designed composter that is compact. I chose this one because you didn't need to turn it manually and also because it breaks down food wastes more quickly than other composters (due to the constant internal temp).

The minuses are that it is expensive, but it is well designed and alot of thought went into the construction and energy conservation. For us, the smell is strong enough to notice, so we keep it outside. (some people find NO smell). The unit had no trouble going through a Minnesota winter. We have it next to the house on a concrete slab, so it is moderately protected from the elements.

You also do need to add a dry material, like sawdust regularly. This is a little hassle for us, but I believe that all composters need this material, so you would need to do this no matter which one you chose.

I got a composter because I hate throwing away things that can decompose naturally. I no longer live near a place I can toss out my veggie scraps (without the neighbors giving me dirty looks) and then wound up with a $300 plumber bill after I clogged my pipes from using the garbage disposal on our family's food wastes. oops! With the composter I rarely use the disposal now.

Somewhat smelly April 16, 2010
By HSmamma
We bought this to add to our kitchen remodel. We even had a dedicated electrical outlet installed under the prep area. Unfortunately, it will NOT be living there. We have noticed a smell. When I come home to a closed up house I want to smell my essential oils in a diffuser, or dinner in the crock-pot; NOT COMPOST!! I love the way it works, and we follow the directions precisely when it comes to adding sawdust and baking soda. It makes fabulous compost! Regardless, our home was smelling just like the feed store at the edge of town: earthy, and a little icky-sweet. I like the feed store, but not in my kitchen. We haven't decided if it's going to stay outside, or be put in the garage which is not attached :( . Either way, it's not the convenience we were looking forward to if we have to don our snow gear to compost in the winter. I'm only giving 3 stars because one of the main advertising points is "no odor". There is odor--always; not just when it's been opened. I suppose it's just a personal issue as to whether or not it bothers you.

Not suitable for indoor use February 6, 2011
So I paid the money and tried this product. Initially the smell was bad, even with the baking soda and wood pellets. That did go away after a while, but the unit continued to make a constant noticeable hum and fan noise that was not solved even with a new pump that was sent. We placed it inside a cabinet, the hum was still very noticeable - so much so that after 6 months we relocated it to the garage.

Overall, my impressions are that this unit needs more tooling before it's ready for use.

1) Noise - unacceptable for indoor use unless you like the constant drone of the fan, and then the churning sounds every few hours as it turns the compost. This never went away even though the manual said it would be less noticeable over time. For kitchens that are in an open floor plan, you can hear it throughout the house.
2) Smell - you will always have a bit of smell with the unit. It won't be a nasty garbage smell if you use baking soda and wood pellets, but it can be noticeable and make a kitchen smell weird.
3) Leaking - it does leak, and is messy. Liquid tends to seep out of the unit and I had to remove the unit on several occasions and clean the floor around it. This was not mentioned in the prior reviews. The unit was functioning correctly and not jammed or anything. Basically it's a messy job.

Overall, I'm unimpressed with it, especially for the money spent. I'm moving my composing back to the outdoors, throwing this unit out.
