5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the 2K series and probably the best NBA game ever
I picked up NBA2k2 bright and early this morning. I've been a satisfied owner of the two previous versions and NBA2K2 builds on Visual Concepts previous successes. Some issues that are addressed in the new version include:
-More realistic scoring (no more 100 point 20 min games)
-You can intercept passes now
-Alley oops are now automatic

3.0 out of 5 stars It was alright
Im a little tired of hearing all of these people rave about a game that they have never played. You cant judge a game's future success purely by its past success. And NBA2k2 is a true testament to that statement. I have always loved the NBA2k series which is why I have them all. But yesterday I bought 2k2 and I didnt like it that much. The movement is now more...

-It's actually hard to play the CPU on All-Star mode
-Updated rosters including: Jordan

Overall its the best game ever but there are some things that are lacking:
- No personalized announcing
- Announcers say the same things that they did in 2k1
- In game music is the same
- bugs still exist from previous version including plenty of announcing and in-game stats bugs. A lot of bugs that are so obvious I can't believe they would let them slide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Better, October 28, 2001
By
This review is from: NBA 2K2 (Video Game)
This game is undoubtedly better than the previous versions. Improved defensive play and strong rebounding add to the adrenaline, along with smooth lay-ins and realistic alleyoops.

Michael Jordan being in the game doesn't hurt, either. Mike is very realistic, with a beautiful fade away and a consistant jumper. He also is slower to the basket, much like the 39 year old he really is. But his dunking is still there, though he doesn't do it too often in this game.

The players are rounder and less blocky looking in this game as well. The guys move a little more realistic, dribble a little fluid, and post up gorgeously. It's much harder to block shots in this years version, but when you do block a shot, you don't swat it all the way into the 5th row. You block it as a real player would want to block a shot, back down at the court.

Now players can dash into passing lanes with the simple pressing of the jump button, and knock away what used to be easy lobs into the lane for dunks. You can also steal the ball when a guy faces up to you and holds it in front of your face.

There are fewer glitches - no doubt. Less ridiculous charging calls. All in all..a great game.

5.0 out of 5 stars NBA 2K2 is the best, October 24, 2001
This review is from: NBA 2K2 (Video Game)
Yeah... its true! Nba 2k2 is THE BEST Basketball Simulation ever. It has it all. Perfect responsive game play, no annoying flaws, smart Defensive AI, cool moves, and Explosive DunkS!!!! And yes, a return of street ball with one added court, Mosswood Park in Oakland California. You can play 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, or 5 on 5. This game has franish, season, exhibition, practice, and more. Create a future Allen Iverson or hit the court with your very on Created team. Be smart like me and buy NBA 2K2, you wont regret. Peace Out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best b-ball you can buy, November 29, 2001
This review is from: NBA 2K2 (Video Game)
NBA 2K2 for the Dreamcast is far and away the best basketball game available for any system. NBA Live? No comparison whatsoever. Live plays badly, the animation is choppy, posting up is NOT effective, and nobody EVER rebounds. 2K2 looks and plays smoothly, posting up is actually possible(and works!), and your guys actually box out and go after loose balls without you having to do it all. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because, as has been mentioned by others, the AI doesn't defend the 3 extremely well.
Defense on the ring is generally pretty loose. With a player like Stockton or Glenn Robinson, you can light up the opponent for mad points from outside. One time I dropped like 10 straight. Eventually though, the AI will catch on and start doubling and coming after you.
The AI plays the zone D pretty well. It'll take a lot of ball movement to find a path to the bucket. Mid-pass steals are also a great addition to this version and will really help or REALLY hurt you if you're not careful with your passing.
Anyway, if you're a hoops fan BUY THIS GAME. Some people are used to and just like the way that Live plays, and I was a hardcore Live fan myself until I picked up this game. It just plays smoother and more like the real game. True, no game will likely ever truly capture ever little detail of the game, but how could a videogame ever do that? For my money, NBA 2K2 is the ONLY b-ball game worth playing. And we'll see how it handles on the PS2. Now all I'm waiting for is College Basketball 2002...

NBA 2K2 is a great game. it's fun. i like to create-a-team and create-a-player on customize mode. THIS GAME is better than NBA 2K. YOU can PLAY on like 5 or 6 street courts. YOU can play
2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, or regular 5 on 5. YOU CAN still go on exhibition mode just like on NBA 2K. NBA 2K2 IS fun AND cool.
my brother, and my friend like this game.
YOU can play as M.J., Shaq, KOBE, A.I., KEvin Garrett, TRacy McGrady, Vince Carter and other players. that's why I rated this game 5/5. ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Live by FAR 4.4 stars, December 16, 2001

This review is from: NBA 2K2 (Video Game)
I bought a dreamcast along with this game last night. Since I refuse to purchase a 300 XBOX just to play live 2002. I got a tip from somebody that this game is much better than live so I decided to give it a shot. They were right. This game plays and looks much better than the Live series has EVER looked. The player movements are more fluid, the commentary is not bland (eventhough they do repeat themselves) and they actually seem to be watching the game. In addition to all of this the game seems more realistic. For example in Live, you usually can ALWAYS cross over a defender and drive to the basket for an easy two. Not in 2K2 (or maybe its just me). It seems to me that the defense is alot better which makes for a more challenging and enjoyable experience. Similary the offense is much better, if you give them a wide open lane, they will go in for the slam everytime. They don't stand around and do nothing as the players on live do. Because of the better offense you have to play better defense, much better. In Live you can get away with lightly covering your man, but in 2K2 you will get taken to the hoop everytie. As for you computer controlled teamates, they actually go for the REBOUND when someone misses a shot, on both offense and defense, another plus over Live.

This game also has alot of features, including:

practice mode (where its just your players and the basket)
Street mode (in which you can play 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 in famous outdoor basketball courts around the country)
tournament mode
franchise mode
Camera mode

I just got the game last night so I may have left some out.

Now the reason I gave this game 4.4 stars instead of 5; Having played Live for 7 years, the new controls for 2K2 is taking a little time to get used to. There is no one-on-one mode. The plays seem to be on the lacking side, and making play calls are a bit cumbersome. Alley oops are done automatically, instead of manually. I also have not figured out a way to stop my teammates from doing intentional fouls when the score is close. The anouncers repeat themselves a bit, but this is real common in sports game and like I said its still much better than Live's announcers. Finally also being able to block nearly every shot and steal very often in the Live series, I am finding it real difficult to do the same in 2K2. Other than the intentional foul issue, these problems are very minor, and they do not affect the gameplay.

Don't let the minor issues I listed above scare you, this game is MUCH better than Live by far. The reason I got this game was because I wanted a basketball game for 2002, and since EA decided NOT to release Live on the PC this year, I had to go elsewhere. I did not want to spend 300 on the XBOX for this game, so I got the 50 dollar dreamcast instead. If you already have an XBOX, then I would probally wait until 2K2 is released for it, because it may even be better on it. But if you don't have an XBOX like me, then get the dreamcast and enjoy this game. EA has lost me as a customer for good, and Sega may have me as a new one.

This game is pounding with mew features such as all of the new and awesome uniforms, arenas, and players (JORDAN!!!). 2k (...) 2k1 was good but this one is great. All of the new street courts are incredible and the game moves so smoothly you will hardly remember that this is a video game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge improvement over 2K1, February 18, 2002
This review is from: NBA 2K2 (Video Game)
This is by far the best Sega Sports game and a huge improvement over last year's game. Basketball is my game and Sega's NBA 2K2 is definitely the best basketball video game availible for any system. This game is plagued by only a few minor flaws unlike NBA 2K1.

The gameplay is simply amzing. I like the idea of having a direct pass button on offense, and a button on defense to play defense like in real life shuffling your feet and all. Shooting is very easy and efffective especially if you release the ball at the top of your jump shot.

The graphics are greaat although not as good as EA's NBA Live 2002. The players are easily identified to their NBA counterpart and Allen Iverson has his Iverson shoes unlike in 2k1 where everyone wore the same black or white shoes.

The rosters are very up-to-date and if a trade happens don't worry about the game being out of date just go to customize to do the trade yourself. And when draft time comes around just create that player onto their new team.

The Francchise mode is great. You egt to lead your team through multiple seasons with trades, free agency, and retirements. You can also choose to play with the teams NBA rosters or do a fantasy draft where you can have any NBA players.

The announcing is great although repititive more times than not. When Iverson scores a lot they always say the same thing and are always saying the same thing usually twice a game, but they are still very realistic and actually seem to be watching the game unlike ither games announcers.

The only thing about this game that could have been made a little betetr are the graphcis and the gameplay because when you post up you almsot always get a wide open layup or step out of bounds for no reason at all.

Overall this is the best basketball agme availible for the Dreamcast right now. This game for the PS2 is also betetr than Live and is also availible on the XBOX.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basketball on the Dreamcast at its finest!, January 29, 2004
This review is from: NBA 2K2 (Video Game)
After jumping ship from NBA Live I can truly say that NBA 2K2 is worth every penny. The graphics are sweet, the sound it great and the moves are awesome and the replay value in this game is unheard of. When you think that you've experienced it all you can find a new way to enjoy it.

A BY FAR great improvement over 2K1 which suffered with control issues and over strict gameplay. This is a must have and the intro is so cool I watch it every time I play the game and never get tired of it!

When you finish playing NBA 2K2 you can truly say "I love this game!"
