3.0 out of 5 stars I dunno guys...
After playing the big three b-ball games for '06 (NBA Live, NBA 2K6, and NBA '06: The Life), and reading the reviews posted here for each, I'm still not convinced about much of anything, other than the makers of these games got a bunch of our hard-earned dollars for giving us very little as far as quality gaming. To wit:

1. NBA Live '06 - This series should...

NBA 2K6. There's only one word to describe it, and that is BRILLIANT. It's like an NBA/gamer fan's dream come true. NBA Live games have always dominated when it came to NBA games season after season, but it's only the truth when I say that 2K6 knocks NBA Live 06 right out the box. 2K6 has done a nice step up from last year's game. Of course, the modes, graphics, gameplay, soundtrack, and everything else that makes an NBA game great are perfected here in the most realistic basketball game on the market.

The gameplay is tremendous. For the first time in a basketball game, your teammates on the courts will actually jump for a rebound, instead of standing around like idiots. When was the last time THAT happened in NBA Live? So you actually get a little help with rebounding from your other guys, instead of you doing all the work on the boards. Another thing is the right analog stick to be used for shooting. It might take a veteran NBA gamer to get used to this, cause in most games the right stick is used to juke and spin. The left analog is used to shake defenders in this game. Since it is also used to simply move your player around, it will take some getting used to, but after you do it's not a problem at all. The right analog stick is also used to shoot free throws. You have to time it just right to make the shot. You pull the stick down, and hold it as long as you think you should and then let go to shoot. That may be weird as well, but you learn to let the stick go at the right time the more you play.

24/7 mode is brought back once again. As most know, this is where you create your own streetballer and go through streetgames to unlock new gear and get players phone numbers so you can use them as teammates with 2-on-2 games. When you complete all the games at one court you play a superstar to be the king of the court. When you get enough hype, certain celebrities will call you out. 2 of them are Flava Flav and my man Joe Budden (when's the album droppin Joey?). This is a pretty fun mode when you get into it. The Association mode is kinda the same as a normal Franchise mode. You pick a GM and take a team through seasons. In the season you can set up practices, do player development drills (which you perform yourself with a player), and all the normal stuff like trade and release players. Both modes are pretty cool.

Certain in-game things are great as well. Before the game starts, they'll pick 2 players to watch for and you see them warming up (which has been on past 2K games). At the end of the 1st quarter, they pick a standout player. At halftime, you see a standout player and his stats and highlights, and also an "Around the Cooler Update" which is pretty cool. Most of the commentary is not repetitive for once, and they actually say things relevant to the game. You're never really bored when playing a game. Also, if you're beating a team pretty badly by the end of the 3rd, your coach will automatically put bench players in so the starts can get a breather. I think that's tight because most other NBA games, when you're killing a team, will not substitute starters even though you're gonna win either way. It adds to the realistic feel. One more thing is that when you're playing against Shaq and the Heat, they'll depend heavily on Shaq getting points in the paint, just like in real life. Definitely something that adds to the game.

Also, the great graphics, killer soundtrack (with artists like Jean Grae, RJD2, Zion 1 and others), and the Crib are great extra additions. Just more reasons to buy this game over any other basketball game. You can't forget about the price either. 40 dollars to NBA Live's 50? And this game is better? You can't beat that, no way. So if you're a gamer and an NBA fan, this is the game you need to pick up. You won't be dissapointed at all. Phoenix to take 05-06.

5.0 out of 5 stars much better than LIve, October 17, 2005

This review is from: NBA 2K6 (Video Game)
I played Live 06 for about 2 wks b4 getting sick of it. I traded it in for this game, and I definately enjoy this game better. It's much, much more realistic in terms of actual ability and skill than 06. For example: In this game, even if you contest guys like Ray Allen or Peja, they will hit around 75% of their shots. In LIve, even if you contest guys like Derek Fisher and, no joke, Fred Hoiberg, they will score at least 30 every game. NO JOKE!! The actual gameplay is more realistic than Live, as player movement and crowd and cut scenes are better and generally life like. The EBC player you create would be better if they didn't start him off with little to no skill. I mean, even the worst in the NBA have at least 1 definite skill. But besides that, and a soundtrack that sucks a$$, this is a great game. I'm glad I got it, and all I had to do was trade in Live for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars NBA Live 2006 vs. NBA 2K6, April 20, 2006

So you're looking for an NBA game but don't know which one to get? I shall sort through the good and bad offered in both NBA Live 2006 and NBA 2K6.

Between the two I have played (Live '06 and 2K6), I can honestly say NBA 2K6 was a better buy for me. At $20 I've had countless hours of some of the most joyous moments and some of the most frustrating. However, NBA 2K6 is more of an all-around basketball game. If you're good at offense and poor on defense chances are good that you won't win as many games as you might think. But if you're only good at defense and horrible at offense, you won't win much then either. You basically have to play an even game altogether (this is based on All-Star level).

For fans of offensive-minded games, look no further than NBA Live 2006. The basic controls are straight-forward and easy to get a hang of so there won't be any real problems for newcomers to the series (such as myself). The best aspect featured in Live '06 is undoubtedly the Freestyle Superstars. My favorite team is the 76ers and to see Allen Iverson pulling off the moves he does in real life on a game is nothing short of a rush. Another highlight is that when you're left wide open for a shot, chances are extremely good that you'll drain it. Whereas on 2K6, you still basically had to have a perfect release.

As for the overall look of each game, I'd say that NBA 2K6 steals that as well. When you're looking at Allen Iverson (or any other player for that matter) there's no question who you're looking at. He's got his tattoos, his cornrows, mustache, everything. NBA Live 2006, on the other hand, almost tends to look childish at times. Don't get me wrong, the graphics and dunks are awesome to look at, but as you're dribbling upcourt I can't help but think the player's arms are too long. Of course, that could just be me. 2K6 also seems to have more realistic courts (I could do without the shots of the fans though).

NBA 2K6 pros:
-Fantastic gameplay
-The more you play the more you learn, making it a game you can invest time in
-The graphics are great
-When you turn up the difficulty it ACTUALLY GETS HARDER

NBA 2K6 cons:
-Offseason on Legacy mode is kind of lame
-Too frustrating at times
-When the other team is on a run, it's nearly impossible to hit anything other than a lay-up
-Loading time is almost ridiculous

NBA Live 2006 pros:
-Easy for anyone to pick up and play
-Freestyle Superstars
-Commentary is a lot better than 2K6
-Dunks are fairly easy to execute and make for some excellent highlights

NBA Live 2006 cons:
-Camera angle is horrible
-Far too offensive-minded
-Almost too easy at times
-Fouls are called too liberally on you

So there you have it, a fairly unbiased view on each game. If Live '06 were to drop down to $20 I'd highly recommend it, because in reality, it really is fun to play. But at $30 I'm not sure if it's worth every penny. Plus, 2K6 has a great street ball mode in addition to the legacy mode, so did Live 06 ever really have a chance?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Gameplay Yet, October 15, 2005
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA 2K6 (Video Game)
The presentation of this game makes you feel like you've taken a step back in time. The menu's are basic and quick loading, and it seems they didn't put much time into hyping you up for the tip-off. But once the game starts, this is the best hoops game I've played. The gameplay is great. The defense is more interactive, as you can reach to pick off passes and choose whether you want to swipe for the ball with your right or left hand -- and it's simple. There aren't 10 different combinations of buttons involved. Using your right analog stick allows you to to make a variety of impact plays, including specific dunk or layup styles that help to avoid charging fouls or being blocked when you get inside with the trees.

The guys actually jump for rebounds in this game. The ball never bounces off the rim and to the ground 3 times before the smallest player on the court grabs it and drains a wide open three-pointer as your guys are scrambling to find the ball. The bigs block out, time their jumps, and grab the rebound. Sometimes they even tip the ball to themselves or other teammates as their battling for possession. It's very realistic.

There will never be a game that's totally realistic when it comes to shooting percentages. Let's be real here -- how often does a player hit five threes in a row? In real life, maybe once a week. In video games it can happen on an every game basis. This game is moderately better in that area. Some guys are still ridiculous at times, knocking down threes from all over the court when the game is on the line (Since when can Vladimir Radmanovic score 15 points in 2 minutes?), but for the most part -- it's harder to knock down the long ball. Even a wide open Paul Pierce isn't going to hit every shot. They may not be human, but they are more like humans than they ever have been.

Also, if you are contending a less than all-star player near the basket as he's attempting to put up the 2-3 foot lay-in, you have a good chance at either blocking him or causing him to miss the lay-up. Alot of the poor-to-mediocre bigs can have a hard time scoring in the low post, unless they are really good post players in real life. Example: Jermaine O'Neal will dunk on you, Corie Blount will blow a lay-up. The same thing goes for shooters -- if you try to shoot a contested three with Ben Gordon, you might get lucky and knock it down, but don't expect the same results with Rick Brunson.

This is the best hoops game out right now, until the new systems come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will never pick up NBA Live again, June 27, 2006

This review is from: NBA 2K6 (Video Game)
I have always loved EA games. i have purchased every single Madden game since 97 and every nba live game since 01. With that said I see very little improvement over the years.Last year NFL 2K5 blew away Madden so i figured I would give Sega another chance. After playin NBA 2K6 I have trully become addicted. It's really sad because i skip work to play this wonderful game. However with the many pros of NBA 2k6 thier are also a few cons.

Pros:wonderful graphics, Superb gameplay(realistic from the very start)

Cons: Learn to use directional passing or be a ball hog because you will have a lot of tunovers otherwise. The soundtrack is horrible but you can just put the tv on mute until you start playing a game. Dunks are also not as flashy as nba live but you won't care much.

The bottom line. GO GET THIS GAME NOW. STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND PURCHASE THIS GAME PRONTO.IF YOU HAVE IT, GET ANOTHER ONE JUST IN CASE THE ONE YOU HAVE NOW BREAKS. THROW NBA LIVE IN THE TRASH OR TRADE IT IN FOR THIS GAME. END OF STROY!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Game Owns Live on almost every Aspect, October 9, 2005

This review is from: NBA 2K6 (Video Game)
Do you want a true basketball simulation instead of a game where the CPU predetermines when it'll take over regardless of what team u play as and how "smart" you seem to play? Then 2k6 is for you. This is my first time playing 2k6...meaning I have been playing Live for a quite a while. I bought Live 06 and took it back for a refund the next day. Even though Live 06 has new features, they still retain major problems of 05. Their heads are like cabbage patch dolls and all players seem to "skate" across court.

Now onto 2k6. I have never played a 2K basketball game before this so i cant really compare this to previous editions..However, as a game itself, 2k6 is the closest thing to real NBA action...the body movements, reactions, the atmosphere, and other aspects in the game are almost as accurate and precise. Unlike Live, the players in 2k6 act like their true counterparts. Furthermore, if u play smart and use stragety you most likely will win a ballgame(even in superstar difficulty). AND THATS WHAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT 2K. In Live, it didn't matter whether u played smart or not...the CPU usually took over towards the end of the game and you'd be lucky to even win by 5 points or less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Sim Basketball Game Out There, May 23, 2006

This review is from: NBA 2K6 (Video Game)
First off I own both NBA 2K6 and NBA Live 2006 and have been playing both since they have come out. At first I thought that NBA Live 2006 was a better game until I played NBA 2k6 more and more and realized that it was the best simulation basketball game out there. The addition of the shot stick to this year's game changes the way you shoot as well as play the game. The game is very enjoyable especially with friends because some of the games can get very intense. Overall the game is probably the best in the series because it made a major improvement over ESPN 2k5.

Pros
-Graphics are the best of any basketball game on the PS2 to date.
-Free throws more realistic in that you must have a fluid motion as if you were shooting the free throw yourself.
-VIP is very extensive and detailed to show your stats and tendecies which is a very nice touch to those that pay attention to detail such as myself.

Cons
-Steals happen way too often.
-Very challenging to get 15+ rebounds.
-Practice mode is still relatively useless other than to perfect your timing on your shot.

A Kid's Review

This review is from: NBA 2K6 (Video Game)
I got this game, expecting alot. This game is very good. I have to admit there are many glitches in the game. Also i have to say the team ratings are inaccurate. Do u think Nets should have a 76 overall. That is just garbage. Also, when you pass the ball, their is a 50 percent chance its gonna get intercepted. I'm not saying thhis game sucks. The game features a lot of realism. Also, the graphics are INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game is worth buying but if you don't like glitches, you'd rather be better with live or 06.
