= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Give 'N Go (Video Game)
When it comes to remembering basketball games on the SNES, most will remember games such as the NBA JAM and/or NBA Live series, and included may be some comments about some of the dud basketball games such as Bulls Vs Blazers, Showtime, and various others... but this one here was a silent little winner. It never really reached the popularity it deserved, but it offered those who did a really fun time that kept you coming back for more all of the time. Games like NBA Jam gave players a great 2 on 2 basketball feel, but not a very realistic one, where as NBA Live was about as close to a full on Basketball game as you could get at the time (considering technology of the day) but Give N Go was somewhere in between. It is both, somewhat realistic, yet somewhat fake, but still, a great lot of fun. It was one of, and possibly the first basketball game, to actually give a camera angle from behind the ring, instead of a birds-eye-view or side view.
This game is a console version of an arcade game called "Run 'N Gun", I guess the NBA where impressed enough with that awesome Arcade game that they asked, or agreed to allow, Konami to make a console version, only this time, allowing NBA names and teams to be used. The game play is pretty simple, you have a button to shoot the ball/block, another to pass/steal, and one to throw an alley-oop, which if no one is available (close enough to the basket) then it will pass instead.
Your options for game-play are Exhibition (just play a game), Playoffs (compete in the finals series) and can choose if you want to play one game per series, or the 7 games max, against one team, season, and there is something else that escapes my mind right now. Your game options are also "trade players", "customize two special teams of your own choosing" and "again, something else that escapes my mind... as well as options like how long the quarters go for, rules and if you want layups on or off, which means if you turn it off and shoot close enough to the basket, you will always dunk it, and not lay it up... however, while in air dunking, you can press shoot again to switch the dunk to a lay up which can come in handy to avoid being blocked.
I think I have summed up what you need to know about this game, I'm sure I left out plenty, but I am presuming you know what basketball is and how the game is played. I highly recommend this game to anyone who never played it on SNES, and even still to this day I still find myself playing it via emulation on PC and DS, it's just a great, and very underrated game that is nothing like NBA Jam or any other basketball on the SNES, or really any other system at the time, and come to think of it, I haven't seen a game like this since!
Oh, some other things you may want to know; this was during the 1995 season, but some players where contracted to other things and do not appear in this game. So expect that their will be no Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley or Shaquille O'Neil. Unfortunately there is not Create a Player either :(... some other cons are that game-play strategies are pretty easy to work out, and once you do, you can never lose a game, no matter what setting, and player stats do not mean much in this game. In between each quarter and at the end of the game, you can see how many points the starting line-up of your team scored, but if you subbed anyone, for some reason their stats can not be seen, only the 5 on courts show. You can also see your shooting percentages, how many 3 pointers, rebounds and blocks you got, but things like assists and turnovers ect are not an option to see... and their is no leader boards either. So if stats is something you like to keep track of, this game will disappoint you in that area. Oh, almost forgot, their is no play calling either... and each player seems to have a hidden set of attributes; being a bulls fan, I notice Scottie Pippen is a bit quicker then other players, and can dunk from further away... things like this are easy to work out if you where following the NBA in the day and know who the star players of the day where, and who lead what in what, but in this game, it's pretty much just indicated by stars, but not all the easy to work out what those stars represent. It could be dunking, shooting, rebounding etc..
It would have been nice to have seen a follow up version of this game on some console, but for now, this game, or Run N Gun on arcade (can be played via MAME) are two of the most underrated Basketball games in my eyes, and should be much more widely recognized then they are. At the moment, prices for this game are under a dollar, if you're curious to play it, go for it, I highly recommend you won't be disappointed in purchasing and playing this game. (or d/l it)
