Hoopz is basically the latest generation of basketball games in the ultra-arcadey NBA Showtime or NBA Jam vein and has little in common with the more accurate simulations of the Live and Shootout series. In most respects it plays slightly better than the older arcade-style titles, if only because Hoopz is a three-on-three game.
Most gamers will immediately notice the enlarged heads and huge biceps on even the lankiest of NBA players. Also, the fast-paced action basically centers on hurling the ball around the court as quickly as possible without any regard for complicated play calling. In fact, most ballers can easily jump 25 feet above the rim for ridiculous, death-defying dunks that, of course, deliver the ultimate in sports fantasy.
Unlike most of the 2001 season of "real" basketball games for the PS2, Hoopz stretches gameplay with a few mini games. Included are variants on 21, Around the World, Three-Point Contest, and even the old-school 2Ball that features two-on-two team play. There are also unlockable courts for you to find. You can also easily create your own players and cause havoc throughout the NBA with wild league trades and customizations.
While the courts and backgrounds are decently drawn, the player models are disappointingly blocky and fail to capitalize on the PS2's graphics power. Hoopz gives players a backward walk and the give-and-go, among other moves, but the game's emphasis on shoving, steals, and strategy-defying action confounds these nuances. --Mark Brooks

Another disappointing basketball game for PS2,

Like NBA Live 2001, this is another basketball game that disappoints. The good points about the game is the graphics (not great though), being able to "improve" your players by earning attribute points, and multi-tap capability. But the game comes up short when you actually play it. The game itself is pretty slow and really slows down when a player is "on fire". The controls aren't great either. But what's more annoying is that there doesn't seem to be much difference in player abilities. All stars like Kobe or Vince Carter almost plays in same level as bench players. This is really noticeable when you have the lead. I guess it's to keep the scores close. This is a good party/rental game especially with several friends. While this is a sim game, it still doesn't have the playability that of Madden 2001 or SSX.

Midway brings back a polished NBA Jam!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: NBA Hoopz (Video Game)
This game gave me more fun than many I've ever played! I have sega Genesis, and there were two basketball games i have for it. NBA Jam, And NBA JAm Tournament Edition. Those were two of my favorite games for Genesis, and when I played this game it was just like those games. Although, Hoopz has much better gaphics, more spactacular dunks,it's 3 on 3 which is better than 2 on 2 in Jam, And it has a season mode that is great. I definetly recommend buying this game, I know I will!

Another Kick @$$ game for my ps2,
By mike (new jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NBA Hoopz (Video Game)
NBA hooopz will blow you away. games like nba 2ball and 3pt. shootout will keep you adicted and 21 and around the world are a blast as well. if your not into these series of games(nba jam,nba showtime, etc.)rent this game first but i think you'll still love this game but rent it just to make shore. practice mode really doesn't help you get better but it's still pretty cool because if you have another person to play with you can play a game of pig. Some people say the 3rd person added on for 3 on 3 play instead of 2 on 2 play don't do anything. THIS IS NOT TRUE! you just have to pass it twice but it makes the gameplay much better!! so this game is a blast so pick it up if you can!!
