GameSpot Review

While the Nintendo 64 version of NBA Jam 99 may have been a more serious affair than most of the previous games to bear the NBA Jam name, NBA Jam 99 on the Game Boy Color takes it back to the two-on-two arcade action that the series is famous for. In fact, the game is little more than an updated version of NBA Jam Tournament Edition, which Torus Games and Acclaim put together in 1995. For starters, even on an old grayscale Game Boy, the graphics are a lot cleaner than NBA JAM TE's were. The players look and move much better, as well. Most of the same player animations have been used, right down to the various dunks. Many sounds were also carried over from the old game. The music is especially annoying, but, thankfully, it can be disabled in the pregame options. Speaking of options, the game's got a ton of them. You can set tag mode (which lets you play as both players on your team instead of locking you into single player), juice mode (which, if set all the way up to x5, makes the game run obscenely fast), power-ups, hotspots, and even a new option, which lets you choose whether the CPU plays an offensive game, a defensive game, or a balanced game. On the mode front, there's a practice mode, a season mode, a quick-play mode, and the playoffs. Your stats are maintained by a password system. The gameplay is identical to NBA Jam TE. The A button passes and steals, B shoots and jumps, and the Start button is used for turbo. It's not a very elegant control scheme, since you'll be holding down Start 90 percent of the time. The controls can be changed, but with only two main buttons on the system, you're always going to be left reaching over to hit Start from time to time. Even in the arcade, NBA Jam was a game best played with four people. Since this version of the game can't do that, it does suffer a little bit. The poor sound and awkward control definitely don't help, either. But if you were a fan of previous NBA Jam games on the Game Boy, and you don't mind the fact that 99 is merely a colorized rehash of NBA Jam TE, then go right ahead and pick this one up.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. Product Description

Arcade basketball action comes to the Game Boy Color in NBA JAM '99. Enjoy a two-on-two basketball game with no rules using your favorite NBA players. Use the Practice mode to work on your moves, and when you're ready to compete, take on a Quick Play game or become the champion after playing through the grueling NBA Season. If the hassles of the season become too much, just skip to the Playoffs. No matter how you play, all of the classic NBA JAM gameplay remains intact. Players can make five-point baskets by shooting from Hotspots, or receive a temporary stats-boost by collecting the power-ups that occasionally appear on the court. If you are looking for a different kind of basketball game, try NBA JAM '99.

This is a game for sports enthusiasts. It is basically just a basketball game but with good graphics. The auto replay is always fun and there are many camera options. The game has a lot of teams and players.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Game Is Fun For A While, December 10, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Jam '99 (Game Cartridge)
This game is pretty fun when you first play it. It has many moves similar to NBA Jam TE. However, it is better with more players and teams. All the familiar Jam elements in this game include hot spots, turbo, powerups, and unreal dunks. These are cool at first but get really boring after a while. The graphics is very good but the sound is disappointing, especially the music during the game, which is very annoying. One problem with the control is that the turbo button is the start button making it hard to move your player while holding down turbo. Other than that this is a fine basketball game with little realism. If you like the arcade style of the original NBA Jam game then this one is for you. Otherwise, you'll be better off getting a more realistic basketball game in NBA 3 On 3 Featuring Kobe Bryant, which is a better game overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Game is Fun for a While, December 9, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Jam '99 (Game Cartridge)
This game is very fun when you first play it. After a while it just get really boring and annoying, especially the music during a game. This game is is everything but a simulation of the real sport. You can do crazy dunks and shots and catch on fire after making consecutive shots. When you're on fire you can pretty much make any shot within the halfcourt line. There are also icons on the court that boost your scoring such as a 10 pts shot.
The graphics in this game is decent. The music, on the other hand, is annoying after a while. The control is fine except for the turbo button which is the start button. It's really hard to try to move your player while holding down the turbo button at the same time.
This game is good overall. If you like arcade style basketball then this game is for you. If you prefer to play a more realistic basketball game on the gameboy then get NBA 3 On 3 Featuring Kobe Bryant. NBA 3 On 3 plays much more realistic with rules and whistles.
