5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly fun basketball game that never gets old, December 28, 2000

This review is from: NBA Jam (Video Game)
"NBA Jam" was one of the most popular arcade games ever and it's here for the Sega Genesis. What makes "NBA Jam" so much fun is that it's not like your typical basketball video game. It's not 5-on-5 with a bunch of plays to choose from. It's 2-on-2 basketball with no fouls included. The play is fast paced with many basketball moves that you'll soon recognize such as blocks, steals, passing, shooting, rebounding, 3-pointers, and the most exciting part of the game....its dunking. You can play defense by pushing your opponents to the floor and then stealing the ball. The dunks are truly out of this world. They range from just regular reverse and 360º dunks, to windmill dunks, and many where you go so high that you go out of the screen.

Another thing that sets "NBA Jam" apart from the typical basketball video game is that when a player scores 3 shots in a row without anybody else scoring, he will be on fire, making it legal for him to goaltend at will and most of his shots will go in no matter where you shoot them from. That player will be on fire until he scores 5 consecutive shots on fire or until the opposing team scores a bucket.

For the time, "NBA Jam" for the Sega Genesis had some good graphics. The sound is also good and the announcer is one of the best I've heard in a sports game. He even gives the game some humor, such as when one of the players do a certain dunk, he will make Tarzan sounds. Also, in this original "NBA Jam," if you dunk so many times, in the fourth quarter, you can shatter the backboard, but you can't do that in any of the other NBA Jam games such as Tournament Edition or NBA Hangtime. The control in "NBA Jam" is great and best of all, it's one game that will never get old. I've been playing it since it first came out close to 10 years ago and I still like playing it a lot.

There are so many things to boost the replay value in "NBA Jam" to unbelievable proportions. There are codes and tons of hidden characters such as Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Sal Divita, and many other celebrities and people who made the game. If you still have a Sega Genesis that works, I recommend getting "NBA Jam" more than just about any other Sega game. Even if you don't like basketball video games you will probably like "NBA Jam" because it's nothing like the typical basketball game, it's a lot more fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undisputed NBA Jam champion: allison5000!, February 5, 2001
This review is from: NBA Jam (Video Game)
Wow, I'm so surprised to see this game listed on Amazon! I've been playing NBA Jam on Sega Genesis for over seven years now. It's the only video game I play, and I've logged over 3,000 victories, maxed out at least 10 codes and am now on my second cartridge. (If you think I'm bragging, just consider how pathetic it sounds and you'll change your mind!) There is no finer game than NBA Jam. It has stellar graphics, booming sound and is amazingly fun to play. Just set yourself up with all-time fire and "goal tend" all over the place. It's a blast to control all scoring: your own AND your opponent's!

5.0 out of 5 stars This game rocks!!, December 26, 2004

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Jam (Video Game)
This game is the best of the crop of basketball games for 16-bit systems like the Genesis. Even though it is nowhere near realistic, it is a lot of fun, especially playing head to head with someone else. Team games with 2 players are fairly challenging, but still fun, though not as fun as head to head. It is quite hilarious to hear the announcer saying "Boom-shakalakah" and other funny expressions when someone does a flaming triple flip slam-dunk, even if something like that could never happen in real life. Game play is basically two versus two, and the controls are very simple. There is a turbo function which speeds up moves and can help the player slam dunk, but also decreases defense. One thing about this game is that it is a bit old, so don't expect to find your favorite player. Also, the statistics of each player don't neccesarily match up with how good the real-life player was. But that doesn't really matter when you're having so much fun.
