3.0 out of 5 stars EA drops the ball, September 28, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Live 07 (DVD-ROM)
First of all, the product description and features on this page currently reference the wrong game - NBA2K7. Second, before buying this game, you should be aware that a major bug exists that keeps the CPU from making substitutions except when its players are in foul trouble or it's garbage time. This won't anything away from the experience if you're playing against a human opponent (unless you use auto-subs, that is), but it makes playing a season or Dynasty very unrealistic.

Also, the PG seems to completely dominate the ball offensively. I thought it was a fluke at first, but when Eric Snow started drilling shots and taking it hard to the hoop while LeBron stood around and watched I realized something was wrong.

The "ESPN integration" that was advertised is pretty pointless other than the ESPN name and logo appearing everywhere. Signature shots are nowhere to be found on the PC version, other than free throw rituals.

On the plus-side, the Superstar controls have been divided into tiers so that more players can have superstar abilities, but only elite players can utilize the full array of moves. There are also X-factor players - random, non-superstar players who can unlock superstar abilities during a game when they heat up. The animations are greatly improved - players no longer look like they're sliding around on an ice rink. The commentary with Marv Albert and Steve Kerr is much improved. I've only played about a half-dozen games, but there is a lot more variation in the commentary and it's a lot more conversational than previous versions.

The gameplay is better than last year for the most part. Rebounding has been improved. It takes a little while to get used to seperate buttons for shooting, dunking and layups, but once you get the hang of it, it gives you a lot more control. The free throw shooting is also drastically changed and hard to get used to. (Similar to the kicking in Madden 07, only more frustrating.)

Until EA issues a patch (and I wouldn't hold my breath), I would advise caution before picking up this game. There are some nice improvements, but as usual EA has botched features that worked perfectly fine in previous versions and spent more time implementing new features than fixing old problems.

PC version.

So many bugs in this game its untrue. Waited 2 months for the patch - and now the game doesn't even run.

Good going EA - I have played NBA live since '95. I will never buy another again.

Pathetic.

Repackaged NBA Live '06, new with bugs!

-Frustrating gameplay (get too close to a defender and you are "locked" into a move with virtually no control over your player - forget about the "freestyle control")
-Unresponsive controls
-Unstable, buggy menu UI
-'06 graphics
-False advertising about features that were only available on the XBox 360 version
-Primacy issue in dynasty mode that appeared in '06 is STILL not fixed
-Unrealistic dynasty mode - you can still trade 3 average players (that can easily be signed with minimum contracts) for a superstar
-TERRIBLE support/updates

PLEASE give us NBA 2K7 on the PC!

1.0 out of 5 stars 2 major issues make this tough to play - despite the fun, September 30, 2006

First - this game is (almost) a tremendous game. Much better than previous versions of NBA Live. The player physics and movements on the court are great. Season mode, Dynasty mode, All Star Weekend, all the goodies are there. The vusuals are good and there are many new animations. The game looks and feels great.

However...because of the bug where the CPU will never sub for a starter (unless they get into foul trouble - but never come back in) the CPU starters play all game until exhaused - and keep playing. The CPU never uses any bnech players making playing against the CPU very unrealistic and virtually ruining the experience.

ALso, the CPU's point guard takes most of the shots and drive to the basket for easy layups way too often. Below average PGs will dominate the game scoring 30-40 points a game, while the team's true stars take few shots.

Until EA releases a patch, I would strongly advise to stay clear of NBA Live 07. EA must fix these 2 problems. If they do, this game will be great. If not it is almost unplyable.

this game was controversial when it first came out because of the graphics and the AI. now, however, with modding though various internet sites it really improves the look and the feel of the game a lot. i've been playing some great contests with this game, and it is just so life like. a great buy now for the price. with the playoffs coming up, this game is worth the money. good, solid fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great NBA Game!!, July 8, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Live 07 (DVD-ROM)
The new features EA added are terrific. Total freestyle control makes players more realistic in 2 ways.

One, for instance a player like McGrady is not just a scorer, but a good dunker as well and that's where changing FSS types on the fly comes in handy.

Second, two players for example are Rashard Lewis and ray Allen. In NBA Live 06, they had the same exact shooting ability, but Allen is way better. In NBA Live 07 Lewis is only a star and Allen, being the great shooter that he is, he is a superstar level player. That is why the 2 tiers of FSS makes the game more realistic. Star players are better than ordinary players in the game, but superstar players are the top of the line players.

In 07 you can feel the intensity of the game. The crowd is more into the game and they say "defense" when it's the road team's ball.

I like the separation of the dunk and lay-up buttons since you can decide for yourself whether you want to play it safe and go for the lay-up or take the risk for a dunk.

Another addition is the x-factor. Think Robert Horry. He is just a role player yet he has made many clutch shots. In live 07, for each game a player from each team is identified as the x-factor. If you get him involved then get can turn into a star level FSS, for a short time. You should get him in the game and get him involved. If he does that, then he would get unlocked. If you want to save the ability until later during the game then you should keep him involved. If you want to activate his FSS ability, then hold l1 and press r3 and it will become activated. You should use it wisely since it only lasts a short time.

All the new features that ea added has made the game an improvement over live 06. This is another great game by ea sports.

Just like the Madden series not too much different but the players and a few game option tweaks but still a great two player game. I like the EA Sports they seem to be able to get them to work on Vista unlike the battlefield series that I'm still stuggling to get to work on Vista.
At The Price this is still a great game. Most people only know a few players in the league so player draft aquisitions and team changes will affect only the die hardest of fans.

NBA Live 2007 is a fun game for the average NBA fan. The controls are fairly easy to learn after playing for a while. It's not great, but a good buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars The little things, October 1, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA Live 07 (DVD-ROM)
Amazing how a company can continue to make live after live and somehow never get it right. Live 07 is incredible in features, and for a stat junkie such as myself the dynasty mode was vastly improved with team chemistry, and other goodies making multiple seasons worth playing through.

The rumor mill especially in dynasty was a great addition, and although pointless in many ways, the espn integration is still a cool presentation nod.

However....

There are several things missing in Live 07, that was FINE in previous versions. So once again, they add new stuff, while taking out features that worked perfectly well in the others.

Where the heck is the menu to choose how many games you want to play in dynasty mode? Unless I am mistaken, and the copy I purchased is incomplete, why is there no option to choose a 29 game season in dynasty? It is clearly available in seasons...but missing from Dynasty mode! Granted there are people who don't really care for this, but for those of us who do that is a huge missing part.
That almost triples the normal season length, and for those who play 12 minute quarters, makes playing a full season an adventurous couple of months. Not worth it, not ever.

Still no back down/face up button, you have to press down on the analog stick-I have a logitech controller, so I can always program it in-but it is a pain in the monkey to have to do something to your hardware that should have already been included in the games programming.

Pressing down on the left analog stick makes it nearly impossible to guard players, especially since the 'superstar' shooters can get off a shot in half a nanosecond, making it impossible to contest them!!

Put the entire control scheme together on offense, and you will feel more like you are playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 than a basketball sim. The pro hop buttons are moved to analog, a LOT of the cooler superstar moves have been moved to analog, with weird half circles and dragonpunch combos and whatnot. I don't know anyone who has this many fingers. There is no way to completely enjoy the features of this game, because I don't think it is possible to play a competitive game against the computer with your fingers so far from important buttons.

Trying to combine necessary buttons with the new scheme is frustrating-and it shouldn't be.

The ai still sucks spaceballs, but thankfully I witnessed my ai controlled center actually jumping and blocking shots for once. That is a HUGE improvement over them standing around and doing nothing.

But ending this short: It is the same game, only with a few bells and whistles. I uninstalled it after realizing this in a matter of an hour, and I will be getting my full refund and possibly purchasing a console. Guess I should have realized that when my buddy offered it to me 'half price' after he only had it for a while, that there was a reason he was giving it up so easy.
He said I would be back and ask for my money, oh, how right he was!

Yes, a console. What a crappy idea, but better than waiting around for EA to make a playable basketball sim.
