More to come within the next few days but I thought it important to leave some basic impressions of the game for those who might consider purchasing it.

NBA Live is back with four years having passed since the last release. Inexplicably EA Sports left out a tutorial, practice gym, or anything along the lines of even Skill Games to get acclimated, learn how to play, and how to get better. That means first experiences are going to be overwhelming and frustrating. Killer for a title that should be playing up accessibility as the competition is viewed by some as being less than accomodating for the inexperienced players.

The feature set is decent...if not fleshed out completely. Dynasty mode, career mode, Ultimate Team, and online play are all there but also lacking in certain ways. Career (Rising Star) mode is about as basic as it gets. Ultimate Team has no Auction House which will disappoint fans of that mode. Online play has Head-to-Head Seasons and 7 Game Playoffs which are neat on their own but there are no leagues or Online Dynasty. The ESPN presentation is probably the highlight of the game.

Graphically the game is well below the level of the competition and arguably doesn't even look like a next-gen game. Gameplay is rough in spots, animations archaic, outside shooting difficult to get the hang of, and responses to button presses sluggish (passes especially are too slow to go). Online games have been fairly enjoyable but playing the CPU, when not really understanding how to execute anything since the game didn't teach how to do so, is far from being a fun experience.

NBA Live 14 has some decent ideas but none are fully executed in this first year back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible and terrible....a pathetic effort February 21, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4
I am back with another basketball game review after a long hiatus. As a new owner of a PS4 I decided to purchase NBA Live because I wanted to try it out and I had been a EA basketball fan since Dr. J vs. Bird and also Lakers vs. Celtics for my old Tandy 1000 comp.

Anyway, there have been a ton of negative reviews for this game but I watched some online videos and I liked the ESPN presentation so I figured I will try this out.

I am not going into specific detail about graphics and how they are PS2-ish as that has already been mentioned in reviews. However I am into the aestethics such as jerseys, editing, stadiums and those other things.

When I fired up the game and installed the new patch, I immediately went to the rosters section so I can check out how updated they were. It was not really up to date, but at least the numbers and positions are correct. I then looked for an option to edit player, not as much as to edit their stats and attributes, but to edit their appearance and number. There is no edit player, no edit number at all! As a matter of fact, there is no option to hire, fire, trade, and create player. Baseball Stars for the NES had those options in the 80's, but this supposedly next gen title omitted them! I tried out a mode called Ultimate Team and that was hilarious. The default players were all scrubs and 13th men, ratings all in the 60's, and it assigned default logos, jerseys, arena, and coach which cannot be modified until you get enough points.

For example, on my ultimate team it gave me the Magic logo, the Nuggets home jersey, the Knicks away jersey, the Heat arena and the Raptors coach! I had two players wearing the same number, E'Twaun Moore and Josh Harrellson both wear #55 and I cannot edit them so it's ridiculous.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst live game ever February 24, 2014

I bought this game hoping the reviews were wrong. Let me tell you, they are not. This game is trash. I am a huge fan of the Live franchise and when they make the 15 version I will give them one more chance. This game has too many kinks in it that take away from the positives. I love the controls on live over 2k, but I just can't jive with all of the issues of horrible forced passes, multiple missed shots even when wide open, and just bad mechanics. I took this back and got 2k and I've been enjoying myself much more. I don't usually curse but two hours of playing this caused me to use words I didn't even know I knew. Save your money and time and get 2k.

1.0 out of 5 stars WTF is this...? December 3, 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation 4|Verified Purchase
This is the worst game I have ever played. I was a huge NBA Live fan, but not sure what this is... Gameplay is horrible and the graphics are even worst. I about to trade this is for anything else that's available... Save your money, listen to the other reviews... I learned my lesson...

Solely focusing on the gameplay aspects here, NBA Live is back, but is shown as a rookie that's fundamentally very raw, but has a great potential upside if developed and nurtured right.

Simply put, out the gate for the year one effort, Live is a base foundation game at best at this point (ie: Think BackBreaker). The game has a lot of good to offer at a base/entry level. First of all, you have to learn how to play this game in regards of the control schemes regarding the moves (dribbling, post moves, playcalling). The dynamics of how players position and move on the court, especially when plays are called is nice to see. The ease of calling plays as well is nice (especially for individual playcalling via 1 or 2 taps on the directional pad) for either post, screen, or isolation focused plays.

Regarding the BounceTek dribbling mechanics, it's a nice aspect to see added to the game. The 3 stages of dribbling moves is nice to see, espcially when breaking down the defenders respectively. Couple this with the step-based locomotion, it's very nice to see the player positioning count respectively as there aren't two player interactions that dictate the win/loss variable in dribbler vs defender matchups. Plus, you have dynamic basketball physics as well that is highly tangible for the most part when the ball is hit either off a players leg, arm, or body by accidental contact, or intentional block or steal.

Regarding the CourtQ aspects of the game, I can appreciate the player AI regarding how CPU offense and defensive play dynamically will adjust during the course of the game. To see the dynamic player skill and tendency updates happen daily, this helps with refreshing the gameplay experience daily, so you get a nice variety as a user for each gaming experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars I should have listened to the other reviews.
I have read all of the reviews, played the demo, and I enjoy playing 2K14. Yet I still went ahead and downloaded Live for $29.99 on PSN. Here's what was going through my mind. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Go buy 2k14 instead.
Go buy NBA 2k14 instead. You won't regret it. EA puts out subpar products like Madden and this crap. 2k is a million times more refined.
