5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece for EA
NBA Live 2001 keeps with the the great trend of spectacular LIVE games. The new features make this game a wonder and a must for every basketball fanatic! The graphics are outstanding along with everything you'd expect in a real game (i.e. referees' whistles, shadows, shoe squeaks, emotions, intense crowd, etc.). 2001 includes 3-way trades, animated bench, variant...

3.0 out of 5 stars A step back... Buy 2000 instead!
What a disappointment! Live 2000 was (and now still is!) the best hoops sim ever. This game not only doesn't really improve on it, but it also take a step back. The PROS: best graphics yet in a PC sports game; cool low-post moves make scoring with your center more realistic; good game flow. The CONS: ... AI, the CPU never leads a fast break EVER; rebounding is...

2001 includes 3-way trades, animated bench, variant commentary, and a new soundtrack. Perhaps the best part about the game is franchise mode. This mode allows you to create a team and play with them for up to 10 seasons. Team chemistry can change, there is a draft, you can sign free-agents, and retire players. If you want complete basketball fun, I recommend you get this game now!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The same old flaws all over again., May 15, 2001

This review is from: NBA Live 2001 (CD-ROM)
NBA Live 2001 has some amazing graphics, some of the best I've seen to date for a baseketball game, but sadly the the gameplay is flawed in several areas. The first very frustrating flaw is when your guy is taking to the basket on a fast break, and the guy will just stop a shoot a little jump shot and miss it, instead of dunking or laying the ball in at times. This is especially frustrating when you use a guy like dunkers when you know they can dunk it, but instead they decide to shoot a jump shot. And even when they gets a dunk attempt, the player will even screw that up too at times. The second major flaw is that all of your computer players are lazy and don't run after the ball, so expect to get your brains beat in on the boards at times. It has been this way for years and I've been hoping they would fix these two huge problem areas. They are so bad that it seems the computer is cheating at times. This game has the potential to be a great game with it's great graphics and sounds, but these two big flaws really hurt the game a great deal. I hope EA Sports fixes these problems next time around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ever., February 10, 2001
This review is from: NBA Live 2001 (CD-ROM)
I'm a huge fan of the series, so it was with baited breath that I awaited this much-postponed release. So far, it hasn't disappointed me. Graphics: Amazing. Simply put, the best graphics of any PC game I have ever seen. IF you have the horsepower to run them... Control: Very good. I do think the players move about a little too quickly, without as much mass as they did in '2000, but the best out there. Sound: Again, very solid if not very different from last year. Gameplay: Excellent. This is where this game shines, with its multiple modes of play, its extreme customizability and pretty well designed interface. With the franchise mode et al, this game has very strong replay value. God knows, I played Live 2000 for about 8 months straight!

Caveat Emptor: To run this game as it should be played (at least 1024x768 resolution), with all the graphical bells and whistles on, you need some serious computing power. My PIII 600 with GeForce2 GTS and 256 RAM are not enough to run it smoothly with ALL the details on Maximum at anything above 800x600. It's playable at 1024 and 1280, you just have to tinker with the details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best B-ball game on the planet!, March 1, 2001

NBA Live 2001 has out-done themselves for a second straight season. The game was definitely worth the wait. The graphics are amazing, soundtrack is awesome, and gameplay is soooooo realistic. It actually feels like your in the game, literally. EA Sports will have a very tough time making NBA Live 2002 better than NBA Live 2001, hopefully EA Sports is up to the challenge!

You probably won't find a better basketball game for your PC, unless you go back to Live 99, yet there are too many problems here to be ignored.
The gameplay is much better than in 2000, yet too often you find yourself having to repeat the moves that work and not being able to do things which seemed simple in 99 (like a simple spin move).
The comments are very repetative and sometimes wrong (Antonio Harvey is always reffered to as "Hardaway"). You'll hear Bob Elliot telling you to play faster and slower on the same play.
None of the players look familiar but the game is still pretty good. I'd check it before buying it and maybe wait for 2002.

4.0 out of 5 stars NBA Live 2001, August 30, 2001
This review is from: NBA Live 2001 (CD-ROM)
The graphics are great, better than that of NBA Inside Drive 2000 (another basketball game I have). The game play is also better than that of NBA Inside Drive 2000 in that you can actually play a competitive game. For example, in Inside Drive, it is easy to build a 20-point, get at least a 80 FG percentage, lead and total about 150 points in a single game (the latter two never happens in a "real" NBA game). That does not happen in NBA Live. Like another reviewer said, there is no practice mode, but I kind of consider the one-on-one feature as a quasi-practice mode in that you just have one player to contend against instead of five.
But in all, a great basketball game, one which I do not regret buying at all.

NBA Live 2001 is a good game, and the graphics are great, but just as EA Sports did in their baseball game this year (Triple Play Baseball), they took away more from the previous game than they added (where did practice mode go?). Still, the game is very well made, and as long as you have a good computer (I have a Pentium 4), the graphics are simply unbelievable. Give it a try - have fun dunking with Shaquille O'Neal and Vince Carter, and sink some threes with Reggie Miller and Dee Brown. The legends are fun to play with too - Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, etc. Overall, this is a fun game that all basketball fans should give a try.

1.0 out of 5 stars And I waited so so long for this......, April 29, 2001
By
This review is from: NBA Live 2001 (CD-ROM)
After last year's intallment of the Live series I was pumped to rush out and buy it this year. And rsuh out I did...when if was finally released. Not that late releases are always a bad thing. If the developer is spending time and effort making improvements and adjustments to gameplay, a wait can indeed be a good thing. However I was sorely disappointed with this game. Lets cushion the bad with the good points first: - graphics are pretty snazzy. Looks like Karl Malone is playing on your screen. - The interface has been cleaned up a little and doesn't take a full 6 seconds to switch screens now. - the commentary is a bit better than last years miserable attempts at humor

And the bad: - No refs?!!?!!? Why was this removed? I had visions of players getting in the refs face after a bad call and getting slapped with the T. - What is with all the steals and blocks?! When was the last time you saw Shaq AVERAGE 25 blocks a game and Jason Kidd AVERAGE 15 steals a game! Come on now there has to be a way to fix this. - No in game save option. Picture this. Finals of the NBA championship. Game 7. One minute left. The Chicago Bulls (yes the NOW Bulls)up by 5. Suddenly the door opens and your mother/father/roomate/snotty little sibling says "You have to get oof the computer now...I need it." Yer sunk...no save option. - Great a three team trading system....too bad you can't make a two computer one human trade. You aren't allowed to make decisions for the computer! - Please please please FIX THE STATS!

Well all in all a huge dissapointment to me. I hope EA can learn from companies like 3DO and realize that people want realism and accuracy not the same old stuff....
