4.0 out of 5 stars Big improvement over NBA Live 2001
First I'll say that I used to have a PS2 system and I had NBA Live 2001. I hated the game. Players didn't look real at all. Proportions were all messed up...Shaq looked about the same physically as Kobe. Faces were totally terrible. All that has been corrected in NBA Live 2002. I'm shocked at how close many of the players resemble their real life counterparts. They...

I have nothing against EA, they make great games, but what has happened to their NBA Live franchise? It seems that the quality goes down every year. The graphics are the best, but thats all that I can commend it for.

So whats wrong with it? Gameplay is a new low, you can score pretty much by doing a pump fake and driving to the basket. They also implemented the new NBA...

They even have a number of players wearing their signature sneakers. Graphically, the game is just a huge improvement. Gameplay is also much improved. Game just has a much better "flow". Players move very fluidly and are easier to control. Computer AI still is not great, but it's better than in prvious NBA Live games. I still think players miss too many shots when you go to the higher levels. However, if you do work for open shots, your percentages will increase. Announcers are pretty average. Season and franchise modes are great and create a player mode is fantastic. Overall, I really enjoy the game. I hated NBA Live 2001. Thought it was rushed to the market. EA definately improved things here so if you were like me and were disappointed with Live 2001, give this one a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Basketball Game Ever, October 24, 2001

To all of my PS2 gamers I played the demo in the store yesterday can you say hot!!!!!!!!! On other systems there is always something missing like fake alley-oops that don't look real or Shaq looking half human half monster well, you will find none of this in the Xbox. In fact it has so many real graphics you will forget that you are playing a game and feel like you are watching one. Plus to all my real baller and game lovers of Live that feel Superstar on other systems are too easy this is real a hard fight I only won by six and I am used to at least beating the computer by thirty it will real work on your skills. This is a must have if you have the Xbox.

They also implemented the new NBA "zone" defense, but they didn't really gave the you the chance use it, what they did is they just took away the illegal defense call.

There is also something wrong with dunks and layups: they all look the same. When Kobe or Micheal dunks there is no finesse, all they do is a power slam. Same goes with layups, even the clumsiest player can do a up and under layup with the lanes clogged.

It seems that EA did a bad job on this one. To new gamers, they might not notice the flaws, but to veteran gamers it will be a dissapointed. Rent this one first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice work overall, just one thing..., December 18, 2001

I have had my Xbox less than a week, and I must tell you, I am impressed...I love sport and wrestling games, and have owned NBA Live since the Sega Genesis days, and was looking forward to the gameplay, being a PS one owner...I got everything I was looking for...graphics, gameplay, etc...except for the ONE thing that haunts EVERY NBA LIVE addition, whether Sega Genesis, Playstation, or even XBOX...WHY WON'T THE USER TEAM REBOUND!!! It is ridiculous to find that no matter how or who I box out, shooting guards are rebounding over Mutumbo and O'Neil...????? If this one oversight could be CORRECTED, I would have a complete gaming experience...

4.0 out of 5 stars NBA Live 2002 looks great!, November 12, 2001

The game looks really good!
The graphics are outstanding and it looks so real!
There are cinematics, and plays complain about fouls and yell at referees and during free throws players talk to other players from different teams! It's so realistic! The dunks are amazing and better than ever!
Buy this game! But I always liked Segas NBA 2K2, the gameplay was better because spin moves and crossovers was easier to master than Live 2002. Live 2002 has more problems than NBA 2K2

4.0 out of 5 stars NBA LIVE 2002, Its in the game, July 2, 2004

This review is from: NBA Live 2002 (Video Game)
If you have played the 2003 and 2004 versions of NBA LIVE and played this version, you will find that they are pretty much the same. Especially the 2003, Players all look pretty much the same and there are not any new moves at all. NBA Live 2004 made some improvement but some of the AI is not tolerable. This game has great AI, and great game play with alot of flashy dunks. Sure some of the guys faces doesnt look as good as the 2003 or 2004, and sure, Michael Jordan still plays in this game, and yeh, Nba Live 2004 has that option where you can choose your favorite team and their colors and players will be showing int he menu, but so what? Aren't these sport games all about gameplay??? Petty features should be ignored and we should not encourage EA to make a sport game every year if the roster is THE ONLY thing to be changed. THis is definitely a cheaper but more worth your money NBA Live.

Gameplay:9
Sound: 8.5
Graphics: 8.5
Replay Value: 9
Overall: 8.75

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, Minor Flaws..., November 17, 2002
This review is from: NBA Live 2002 (Video Game)
First things first: This game was a blast, with excellent gameplay, options, and overall depth. Here's what I thought of the XBOX version of NBA Live 2002 by EA Sports:

1. Gameplay: Excellent in almost every way. Unlike in the older versions, now when you play a good team like the Lakers, it's a lot more difficult to win then when you play someone like the Bulls. I've played a season so far in franchise mode, and I have to admit, it was very addicting. Anyone remember playing the old versions of Live, and finding it so easy on the hardest mode to go 35-0 to begin a season? Not the case here. After probably 50 hours or more of gameplay, I still lose 2 or 3 out of every 10 games. And in the big games, playoffs, or against a team like the Mavs, Lakers, Kinds, etc...you really feel the pressure to win. The AI plays smart, the players and bench react, and the crowd cheers with you on big plays, suddenly goes mute when the other team goes on a run. The reason I love this game, NBA Live's gameplay rocks anything we've seen so far!

The graphics: Very good, but not superb. It's really cool to see a 3-pointer swish threw the net once, then rattle around and go in the next. The ball goes in or out different ways now. Example: in past versions, the ball would just CLANK off the rim or SWISH if it went in. No other animation. Now I never know if it's going to go in or out, and it rattles around a different way every time. The dunks in this game are simply put: AWSOME!!! You never see the same dunk twice, and the twists and spins are incredible to watch. The players as well now look great. You can now clearly tell the difference between big 'ole Shaq and a much smaller Kobe Bryant. The graphics bring this game to life. Where the graphics fail you may ask? There isn't any differnce between one pass or steal and another. No behind the back, no diving for lose balls, no jaw dropping blocks. It gets the job done, but nothing else. I guess we're just spoiled in today's time, but parts of the game are just too simple!

3. Options: Once again: very good, but not great. You can do the usual 1 on 1, exibition, season, franchise, 5 on 5. There's still create a player. But unlike in NBA 2k2, you can't do anything but 1 on 1. No 2 on 2, 3 on 3. In streetball, only one court. In franchise mode (this really killed me) no FANTASY DRAFT. AHHHHHHHH!!! I used to love that, and it always seemed to create a new challenge. But for some reason, no fantasy draft in the 2002 version. WHY??? Who knows. Oh, one more thing: No real cash. It's a points system. If you want to re-sign your star, you offer him what...250,000 points? Just make it regular cash like everybody else. I hate the points system.

Overall though, this game rocked. I have probably played it for close to 60 hours, and I still can't put it down. If you want a good basketball game, with the best graphics, gameplay, and overall realism of the NBA. NBA Live 2002 is for you!

Thx!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Game...Few Problems, March 15, 2002
By
This review is from: NBA Live 2002 (Video Game)
NBA Live 2002 is a pretty good game for XBOX. The graphics are great, the Alley-oop button is cool and gameplay is simple once you get used to it.
There are a few problems though:
1. It is difficult to save and load files.
2. Trading and creating players is hard.
3. Shooting a mid-range shot is impossible. The entire point of this game is dunking. Every once and a while you will hit a shot or a 3, but not very often.
4. The computer is not good enough. In most games, the computer is too hard, but in this one it's too easy. I have won every game that I played even on the All Pro level.

This is a good game.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wait for NBA Inside Drive 2002, January 1, 2002
By
This review is from: NBA Live 2002 (Video Game)
I was greatly dissappointed when I popped this game into my Xbox. The play was choppy, not smooth at all and far too slow. At times, the players looked cartoon-like. If I were you I would wait for NBA Inside Drive 2002, which comes out on January 22nd. This looks like a much better game and should prove to be so. People are saying that NBA Live 2002 is better than 2001. Its true, but not by much, plus, 2001 really really stunk! Wait for Inside Drive 2002!
