Amazon.com Review

Any game that uses Eric B. and Rakim's old-school hip-hop classic "I Ain't No Joke" as its theme has got to be worth checking out. Unfortunately, once the song stops and the first whistle blows, NBA Shootout 2001 proves a little hard to take seriously.

While not the worst basketball game ever created, NBA Shootout 2001 (like most 989 Sports games this year) feels as though it was forced to market a bit too early. Overall, the PS2 plays a surprisingly lethargic game. In our tests, many a defense showed trouble mustering enough interest to stop a steady series of lay-ups. You can easily run the same play over and over with the PS2 taking too long to adjust.

NBA Shootout 2001 sports some of the best-looking courts yet seen in a video game. Sadly, while player graphics are decently rendered, only marquee players can be identified without a lot of squinting. While most of the animation runs smoothly, ball handlers run with the stiff upper bodies and painfully bad posture of Boris Karloff in Frankenstein. Disturbingly, you'll often witness balls flying through players and even players running through players! When the on-court action becomes intense, such visual problems become unforgivable.

If there is a redeeming factor of NBA Shootout 2001, it's the controls. Anyone who has played past Shootout games will easily pick up the 2001 PS2 version. Shootout rookies will also find an accessible round-ball game. However, the sloppy AI, uneven graphics, and lack of play modes (exhibition, season, and playoffs) make for a game that will disappoint most video basketball purists. In a bad year for PS2 basketball, we can only say "maybe next year." Those who can't wait should make NBA Live 2001 from EA Sports their first pick for the 2001 season. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Best stadiums in video basketball
  • Solid controls will be accessible to both Shootout veterans and newbies
Cons:
  • Defense has no game
  • Disappointing player graphics
  • Horrible clipping problems cause confusion

Amazon.com Product Description

The ShootOut franchise makes the leap to the PlayStation2 with NBA ShootOut 2001. The venerable NBA simulator adds a cornucopia of technical advances to the game, such as greatly improved opponent artificial intelligence (AI) that is better able to manage passing, fouls, time-outs, and the clock, and a newly designed game engine that operates at 60 frames per second with state-of-the-art ball, rim, and collision physics. The game's TV-style presentation is supported by 22 different camera angles and play-by-play commentary from New Jersey Nets broadcaster Ian Eagle. Graphically, the game is reproduced with all 29 NBA teams, more than 1,000 motion-captured moves and 50 signature dunks of the game's stars, and player models that incorporate height, weight, body style, texture-mapped faces, head shapes, and skin tones into their composition.

New control features for the series include advanced dribbling control, which gives players the freedom to dribble the ball between the legs, around the back, and crossing from one side to the other, and a touch shooting meter. The game also features extensive roster management tools, a create-a-player feature, team-specific playbooks, and animated referees calling fouls from the floor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good game, but NBA Live is a better choice., February 21, 2001

This review is from: NBA ShootOut 2001 PS2 COMPLETE (Video Game)
NBA shootout is like all it's other 989 sports counterparts on the PS2, it's a good rental, but a horrible buy. The graphics are the same as Gameday'01 which makes it all right. The controls are good for the most part, but clipping is a big issue in the game, as every time you crossover near a guard, the arms or legs clip through the body. The Create-a-player is still good, as it gives you lots of options. The create-a-dunk is still very cool, except it loses it's poise after about 20 dunks. The season mode is a normal season mode, choose a team, and win with them. Trade, sign, release; all of the normal GM options are here. Some players faces are life-like, but only BIG superstars, such as Iverson, and Kobe, but not many others. Stadiums are the same, as each team has their own floor. In comparison to NBA Live 2001 for the PS2, the game is quite mediocre attempt at a decent basketball game, but will be a great rental for a weekend basketball game with your friends. If you do buy the game, the season mode will keep you hooked for 3 seasons at the most, along with the create-a-?(insert novelty here).

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this game!, March 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: NBA ShootOut 2001 PS2 COMPLETE (Video Game)
This was absolutely the most frustrating game I have ever played. The graphics are great, don't get me wrong, but the controls and the silly things that your players will do with consistently were so aggravating. For one, every time a shot goes up, defensive rebounding is way too hard. Half the time your players will stand around dumbfounded and then maybe reach down and pick the ball up off the ground. On offense, players will occasionally just wander out of bounds if you are anywhere near the sidelines or baseline. And certainly don't assume that there is any realism to your players abilities. I was playing a friend, and Eric Snow of all people could drive and dunk every time he touched the ball, while Reggie Miller can't seem to be able to make a three to save his life. You tell me, is that realistic? Please rent this before you go out and buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it, December 18, 2001
This review is from: NBA ShootOut 2001 PS2 COMPLETE (Video Game)
First off the players hunch like someone dropped a piano on them. Running out for the tip off looks like the old man 100 meter race. The announcer repeating the same thing until i turned his voice off. This being a game where you buy it thinking it is going to be a good game, when in reality it [is not]. A game where Mugsy Boges is throwing them down and Matt Geiger is draining the 3's. Playing on a harder difficulty and beating the computer is like beating games like NFL blitz. Just don't buy this game!
