Product Description

Platform: PlayStation2

7.0 Presentation Sony has put together another excellent FMV intro. However, the presentation loses some points for the lack of features. 6.0 Graphics The quality of the player models and the player animation isn't quite as good as you'd hope for in a PS2 game, but the arena's and background elements look good and the framerate is solid. 6.5 Sound Excellent sound samples for the crowd and plenty of authentic fight songs. Boring play-by-play and not enough variety with the crowd noise during gameplay. 5.0 Gameplay Control is tight and responsive, but the AI has a lot of problems. Frequencies of things like steals, blocked shots and fouls are all out of whack. 3.0 Lasting Appeal Where is the Dynasty mode? 5.0 OVERALL Mediocre (out of 10)

2.0 out of 5 stars Finally? A big disappointment., January 7, 2001

This review is from: NCAA Final Four (Video Game)
If you have the opportunity, rent this title before you buy it. See what you think, and see if you do not agree with me. Like in years past I did not care for EA's March Madness title. The limited amount of division I teams left out some of my smaller college favorites and the inclusion of 16 women's teams (at the risk of sounding sexist) is just plain stupid. So that is why 989's inclusion of over 300 division I teams has always intrigued me, but in the end, it just isn't worth it The first thing you will notice is how swell the graphics are, but after a few games those rotating heads and faces start to creep you out. See if you don't notice that. But, finally the biggest flaw is the gameplay and the frequency of both offensive and defensive fouls. 3 trips down the court, 2 trips to the foul line, 9 trips down the court, 7 trips to the foul line. I played one game 9 minutes and 46 seconds into the first half and my team had 9 fouls, and no way to do anything about it. Most of the defensive fouls seemed to happen on jump shots even with players that I wasn't controlling and even when I tweaked the defensive "pressure" of my team it didn't make any difference. There is also no "dynasty mode" no way to "practice" and no "create a player" feature thus lessening the replay value. So..., if you like college basketball, watch it on TV. I can't tell you how sorry I am to have to say that.

2.0 out of 5 stars get NBA Live, January 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: NCAA Final Four (Video Game)
This game, as always, is a huge dissapointment for 989 Studios. The graphics are nowhere near PS2 levels. It looks almost identical to last years PS version. There is no dynasty mode. I played 8 games into a season as a mediocre team and was shooting 87% from the field and 81% from three. Way too easy to make shots for you and your opponent. You can rarely get a rebound in the rare instant you do miss. Also stealing the ball is very easy but way too many fouls are called when the computer is shooting. This may not be the worst game I ever played but it should go down as one of the worst for the PS2. If you are a diehard college basketball fan the try it before you buy it. If you just want a basketball game get NBA Live 2001.

2.0 out of 5 stars 989 = Head Games?, February 23, 2001

This review is from: NCAA Final Four (Video Game)
Anyone who has had the misfortune of playing any PC game made by a company called Head Games will know exactly what it's like to play 989's NCAA Final Four 2001 for the Playstation 2. This game looks and plays like it was rushed out the door before it was fully developed and finished. The players move awkwardly, much of the time gliding across the court, and the graphics are, for lack of a better term, bizarre. Everyone from the cheerleaders to the players look like they were mated with praying mantises, then dressed up in baskeball gear and motion captured for the game. Without a doubt, the most infuriating aspect of NCAA FF 2001 is the shoot/rebound button being the same. Grab a rebound, then unintentionally shoot from 90 feet away, over and over again. My suggestion would be to buy EA's superior March Madness 2001 for the PS1, and take advantage of the cleaned up graphics when played through a PS2 console.
