Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for a football game with smooth flow and realistic action, Sega Sports' NCAA College Football 2K3 will certainly fit the bill. The action is evenly paced and straightforward--no flashy 10-foot leaps, no stiff arms that knock the defender into the rotunda--and the talent level is definitely collegiate.

A working knowledge of college playbooks can be helpful as the sets are often highly complex. The producers have added a slew of subtle, but significant features to simulate the game's nuances as well. A quarterback's accuracy greatly improves when his feet are set. You can hide your play calling by holding down the X button and scrolling through decoy plays. You can anticipate using a spin move on offense by hitting the O button before contact. You can use the analog sticks (as opposed to the directional buttons) to run with the ball, and in Maximum Passing mode, you can add zip or a lob touch while also adjusting throws in the air.

The graphics--including players, stadiums, the ESPN-style presentation, and game intro--are all top-notch. With 117 Division 1-A teams at your disposal, devoted players can play full seasons (complete with rankings and bowl selections) or, in legacy mode, you can play multiple seasons, going so far as recruiting high schoolers and running spring drills. The major drawback is the no-name announcing team, a flat-out terrible crew offering an endless stream of stupid jokes and poor analysis. But you'll have the sound off and the stereo spinning anyway. --Marc Greilsamer

Pros:

  • Smooth, realistic game flow
  • Top-notch graphics and visual presentation
  • Attention to game action's nuances

Cons:

  • Game announcers are silly and ill-informed
  • Injury information is erratic

Note: This refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars NCAA FOOTBALL 2k3, November 3, 2002

This review is from: NCAA Football 2K3 (Video Game)
Great game. To those who say the difficulties are too hard: Just practice. It's more like real football that way. You must understand the strengths and weaknesses of your team and your opponent. You can't jump into a head coaches position and expect to win easily and you can't do it here either.

I own the 2k2 version on Dreamcast so I had an extra year with this game. The 2k3 version on XBOX is very nice. On last years game I had to start on Walk-On, but then quickly moved on to Starter. Now I only play on All-American and wish that there was an even higher difficulty. I am in season 6 in the Legacy and have been on All American the whole time, I have only lost one game and have won 4 out of the 5 national championships, I am of course (look at name) playing as the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Legacy is a strong point, figure out what your team needs for recruiting and after that conduct spring drills and see how your team has improved since last season.

I would recommend this game over EA's College Football 2003 game. Sega makes the better product this time.

1.0 out of 5 stars I hate this game, I will never play it again., August 15, 2002

The game cheats!!! When you keep burning the computer he just starts making your recievers drop balls. That is about the lamest thing I have ever seen. The developers just failed to make a good enough AI to stop your offense to the game just cheats, this is stupid, unrealistic, and completely unnerving. And what is up with his 3rd down percentage? Give me a break, I cannot tell how hard it is to stop the computer on 3rd down, it is almost impossible. I have played a lot of football games in my life and I found NONE to be so unrealistic and infuriating as this one. I really liked the 2k2 version but this game is a piece of junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME OUT THERE!, December 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: NCAA Football 2K3 (Video Game)
I have had College Football 2K3 for a while on XBOX. It is 100 times better than EA Sports' NCAA Football 2003. The ranking system for 2K3 is awesome. There is only one flaw that I found. I won the NCAA Championship three years in a row and I was not ranked any of the years following those national championships. I would clearly have the best team in the game and I was never ranked? I don't get that. But overall this is an awesome game. The ESPN adds so much realism to the game and just puts the finishing touches on a great game. EA Sports and 989 Sports have a long way to go to catch SEGA!
