3.0 out of 5 stars another mediocre 989 Sports effort, September 20, 2003

There is a growing contingent of sports games fans who grow tired of EA Sports' offerings. We've been playing Madden/NCAA for over a decade now and we'd like something new. Sega Sports were a nice alternative in the 16-bit days, and 989 had the first few Gamedays down right, but somewhere along the line the whole enterprise fell apart and it has yet to be fixed. Enter the latest Gamebreaker title. Yet another case of "better than last year, not better than NCAA from EA." I like what 989 is aiming at, and it isn't that the game is unplayable, it's just MADDENingly not quite close enough to good enough.

Graphics are fine, some animations are very smooth, but why is there seemingly graphical slowdown on the way to the line, and why does the game chug when the ball is hiked, giving way to normal pace once the QB drops back or the RB gets the ball, only to oddly speed up when the coverage tackles you? It's like playing football in an alternate dimension where time depends on what portion of the play you're in. The ball-carrier goes from slow-motion, to regular speed, then (to borrow a Maddenism) BOOM the defender skips about 5 frames of animation and lays him out. Weird.

Running, despite the "insta-tackle" syndrome is surprisingly easy. Though beware the option will be stopped cold if your QB drifts too close to the line. Passing is easier than Madden (read: not an interception every other play) but not entirely realistic. Defense is a total crapshoot. You can't defend the pass, they can't defend the run. Not good. I like the manual though. At least it's one are they beat EA in. As per previous editions, don't bother with this unless you are tired of EA's offerings. But don't expect to have as much fun either. Oh well, what can you do?

3.0 out of 5 stars uh where is the defense?, September 2, 2003

EA's offering is a far better game than this one. although ncaa gamebreaker is a great pick up and play game. its not realistic by any means. this game will not appeal to purists. i played a game 5 minute quarters i was wisconsin and played wvu. i won the game 42-35. my running back had 299 yds. on 27 carries. the game was a shoot out. well really a run out. i got all but one of the touchdowns on running plays. defense meant nothing. i couldn't stop them and they couldn't stop me. i got a dumb luck interception on the last play when they were driving for the tying score. the running game is great as attested 299 yds. on 27 carries. the passing game and defense you don't seem to have any control over your players on either side of the ball. the game reminds me of NFL Blitz on some levels. it does have a nice coaches mode, improved graphics over last year's version, and kieth jackson and tim brandt are entertaining. if 989 can improve the graphics so they are up to date with other titles. offer a better sense of control to the players. they will have something. hey 989 you all had great football games on the psone. what happened?
