Editorial Reviews

Lead by the Mark Harmon's charismatically hardened Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the easy camaraderie and comic interplay among the regulars make "NCIS" one of the most engaging series of the new millennium.

This William S. Paley Television Festival live event honors "NCIS," the drama series about a Washington, D.C.-based team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Kevin Frazier (reporter, "Entertainment Tonight") moderates the following panelists: executive producers Mark Horowitz and Chas. Floyd Johnson; co-executive producer Gary Glasberg; and cast members Rocky Carroll (Leon Vance), Brian Dietzen (Jimmy Palmer), David McCallum (Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard), Mark Harmon (Leroy Jethro Gibbs), Michael Weatherly (Anthony DiNozzo), Cote de Pablo (Ziva David), and Sean Murray (Timothy McGee).

The panelists touch on such topics as: the show's recent attempt to incorporate character studies into the procedural drama format; McCallum's longevity on TV, spanning from "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." in the 1960s to his current role; and the liberal use of guest stars like Robert Wagner on the show.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: how far ahead story arcs are created; if Harmon is more comfortable with computers than his character; and the show's relationship with the "real" NCIS.

I'm not certain that I can critique this video objectively because I was fortunate enough to attend this PaleyFest event, but I will try. Thank you, Paley Center, for making this video available.

Without being obnoxious about attending the event, I'll try to give an honest overview of what it was like in person. The event began with an introduction about Paley Center and its role in preserving television history. Without any set-up of what would be shown other than an example of the films maintained in the Paley Center archive, a film clip began. The large screen over the stage filled with the image of a 30-something David McCallum, and the audience was generous with its applause and cheers. The clip was a scene from "The Pop Art Affair", an episode of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." Set in a coffee shop, a girl named Sylvia chatted with and sketched Illya and his "Dostoyevsky eyes". That brief scene gave the event a nice spark of excitement. After the "Pop Art" clip, the NCIS Season 7 episode, "Mother's Day" (broadcast on CBS the following night), was shown in its entirety, and the audience was beyond thrilled.

The PaleyFest video starts immediately after "Mother's Day" was shown, with Kevin Frazier's bringing the NCIS gang onto the stage.

Will viewers of the video sense the thrill of the evening?

To be honest, the vibe of the live event may not be there. Fans of Pauley Perrette should know that she did not attend the PaleyFest event; at the time, she was in Paris on a photo-shoot for the CBS "Watch" magazine. The NCIS group is not your average cast, though. They are phenomenally talented and entertaining, so this isn't your average cast interview.

I was at this event and have been hoping for several years for this to be released on DVD.

When my order arrived, I couldn't wait to check it out, to see if it was as I remembered the event.

This is fantastic--great close ups, fantastic audio, and the spirit of the event is well represented. Great to see cast and crew (sadly minus Pauley Perrette, who was away on a photo shoot) interacting and giving tidbits.

I really enjoyed getting to hear about what the cast thought of where the show was going at that point. To see how Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo interacted was awesome. They really do have chemistry on and off the screen. The only thing that was truly missing was Abby (Pauley Perrette). That would have been awesome to hear her input on the show. otherwise was very enjoyable.

I love these people and I love NCIS. I agree with Harmon that it is a team effort. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the antics and dynamics of these folks interacting as real people apart from their characters. There just was not enough time to really enjoy all the banter because there were so many people on stage, The audience had some great questions. The moderator was okay.
David McCallum was superbly charming and funny. I would have loved to see him banter with Michael and Mark. I wanted more time for questions and conversations.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the behind the scenes camaraderie between cast, writers, directors, etc. A great group of people and a family, indeed. Something I believe a real NCIS fan will truly enjoy watching.

Fun and informative to watch. It is so very apparent that everyone connected to the show - actors, writers, directors, producers, etc. thoroughly enjoy working together on this show. I hope and pray that quality of writing and acting continues as it has for the past 11 years - or gets even better! With the highest caliber of all who work on this show, I fully expect it to continue to get better and better each year! THANK YOU everyone for your hard work and for so happily sharing your considerable talents!

I enjoyed watching all the stars interact outside of the show; their personalities are unlike their character, but the friendship is alike, they banter and enjoy each other's company! I was disappointed and misled that this is called "Paley" fest and she wasn't part of this at all. I also didn't like the interview format as it was boring but when they went to the audience to answer questions, then it was interesting. Next time, I'd hope for a more interactive show as the interviewer was awful
