5.0 out of 5 stars Still the source for learning the principles of being an NCO, September 6, 2008

This review is from: NCO Guide: 7th Edition (Paperback)
This book has always been required reading and for good reason, it really describes what it means to be in command. Being a good leader isn't just about barking our D&C. Its about preparing your troops each and every day, leading by example, and trying to keep everyone safe. Great reading and a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not going to advance without it, November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: NCO Guide: 9th Edition (Paperback)
I bought this book after I left the army because it has a picture of me on page 4. Other than that I can tell you from my own experience that the soldiers that actually made it past the grilling board examination and made rank smoothly to sergeant and didn't get immediately shunted back to SPC had this book and read it until it was ragged. The rank game is a series of tests and the first F-up due to incompetence will immediately drop you a pay grade. If you study and can answer any 'pop quizzes' impressively from some high ranking 'visitor' you will go far (they will mention you to your command if you left a good or bad impression on them). Get this book and know every word. And check out my picture. The SGT standing behind me got busted down to SPC because of incompetence (he spent his off time in the gym). People I've seen with this book roughed up on their nightstand and could balance their nightlife with army knowledge made rank easily to the extent of not even being asked any questions during their board.
