5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to look at
I had two 20" Sony Trinitrons on my computers. Finally decided to go flat panel. I did a lot of research and the numbers on this monitor were better than most --- it is brighter (250 lumins), wider viewing area (170 degrees), and a faster screen update speed (25ms). The NEC-Mitsubishi 1920NX model has digital and analog inputs that are supposed to ensure the compatibility with new age computer systems today and in the near future. This review is from: NEC 1920NX-BK 19" LCD Monitor (Black) (Personal Computers)
I had two 20" Sony Trinitrons on my computers. Finally decided to go flat panel. I did a lot of research and the numbers on this monitor were better than most --- it is brighter (250 lumins), wider viewing area (170 degrees), and a faster screen update speed (25ms). I saw it in the store and it just looked better than the others to me. Of course, it's hard to find a store that allows you to make a good comparison. Most stores don't even know enough to run LCD monitors at their correct resolution.

My main concern was how it would perform with fast action games. At first, I noticed just a slight amount of blurring (compared to CRT monitors) when the entire screen was shifting fast, but I got used to it quickly. I don't feel that it is noticable anymore. Of course there's no blurring with movies.

I'm using an analog video card (Voodoo 4) and it is working perfectly - no text ghosting or anything. When I first connected the monitor, I got no picture, then remembered that it must be refreshed between 60 and 75 Hz. I changed the video to refresh at 60 Hz and the screen was a little funny. Don't know how to describe it, but it reminded me of a CRT monitor in interlaced mode. When I changed the refresh to 75 Hz, it gave me a perfect picture.

I highly recommend this monitor (and I'm very picky). No dead pixels. I like the larger 19" size - I run it at the 1280x1024 with the default normal size fonts on XP. No more screen flicker. No more electron guns beaming radiation at your eyes.

Update Aug. 2004: This monitor has been on about 8 hours per day since I purchased it 2 years ago and it is still flawless. When purchasing a flatpanel monitor, be sure to look at the contrast ratio. A 500:1 contrast ratio means that white is 500 times brighter than black. A poor contrast ratio means the black pixels on the screen are partially illuminated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big and beautiful right out of the box (almost), May 22, 2003

I ordered it two days ago and, much to my surprise, it was delivered today (I used the super saver shipping, not bad: two days for free shipping). After the last 6 years with a 17" CRT, I thought I was ready to move on. I'm happy with the reclaimed desk space AND the bigger screen size.

Right out of the box, I plugged it in and started to work. However, everything was pretty blurry and low quality. After going through most of the setting of both my video adapter and the monitor itself, I realised the problem. I have an old PC set up next to my current PC and I have a cheap monitor/mouse/keyboard switch that I use so I don't have to have two of everything. This monitor did not like that switch. When I plugged it in directly to the PC, it worked like a charm.

It's clear, big, bright and beautiful. I've watched a DVD and it looked great (I don't normally do this from my computer, but I did to test out the new monitor). I don't game, so I can't say what action games will look like.

I like it and would recommend getting one if you're due for a replacement like I was.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharp and Clear Text, Beautiful Digital Picture, September 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: NEC 1920NX-BK 19" LCD Monitor (Black) (Personal Computers)
The analog connection is ok but text is fuzzy. The digital connection is FAR superior. Please use the digital connection only if you buy this LCD. Even though it is .29mm dot pitch, it looks amazingly sharp in digital. The text on the screen is amazingly clear and readable. You will have no problems with viewing angles. This LCD is brighter than my old 21" monitor. In fact it is almost too bright for nighttime lights off usage.

DVD movies look superb. Computer games show very slight ghosting but not enough to affect your gameplay.

No sound built in, but that's why I have my existing subwoofer and speakers for.

The casing has a lazy susan at the bottom so you can spin it around, and you can tilt it to suit your height.

Buy it, you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another opinion, August 26, 2003

I write this only because of the single star review posted recently and my thoroughly different impression of the 1920NX. I purchased my NEC-Mitsu 1920NX about two months ago to replace an old 19 inch CRT. Worked like a champ out-of-the-box with analog input from my ATI All-in-wonder 8500 DV video card, video looked good, gaming was acceptable. When my DVI cable arrived, some days later, things just got better. I have NEVER had to play with the settings (other than turn down the brightness - which is really good for an LCD) which was the complaint of the previous reviewer.

I don't want to sound gushy or anything, but to sum my feelings up, when I got an Amazon gift certificate, I bought a second 1920 NX to replace an old 21" Compaq Q-Vision monitor (nearly the exact same viewable area as the 19" NEC-Mitsu - 3/4" less in horizontal).

I picked up this monitor in store, and so far, have just been blown away. Don't let the size specification fool you -- it's 19" diagonal *viewable* size. This monitor always seems to be the brightest in the store, wherever I go, so I took the plunge, and thus far, I've been impressed. Beautiful colors, and at times too bright -- I actually turned it down a little. It was no problem switching from a CRT to this monitor.

I'm still running just in analog, as they didn't include a DVI cable (they did include an adapter, to plug into standard VGA cards). Nice price point and brilliant performance.

1.0 out of 5 stars NEC LCD1920NX - BK Long-Term Review, July 28, 2003
This review is from: NEC 1920NX-BK 19" LCD Monitor (Black) (Personal Computers)
The NEC-Mitsubishi 1920NX model has digital and analog inputs that are supposed to ensure the compatibility with new age computer systems today and in the near future. XtraView® technology allows for "wide-angle views" up to 170°, which only tests at 123° by PC World. The monitor works with analog and digital systems by have two separate inputs in the back of the monitor - built in. These inputs are supposed to work seamlessly in either environment, unfortunately it does not. The analog input seems to run fuzzy and unstable. You have to continuously press the auto sync button to re-adjust the screen and try to have text that is clear.

This brings me to the screen "enhancing" features, in order for you to have the clearest possible screen, that this monitor can offer. The MultiSync LCD1920NX try to cover components to make viewing pleasure as comfortable as possible. Buttons for Auto Sync and Auto Contrast are required to constantly reset the screen so you can enjoy a clear screen with little to no fuzz. Also the DVI/D-Sub button comes in handy for the times the screen is really screwing up thinking it is receiving a digital connection even though you only have analog plugged in. NEC's Rapid Response™ technology allows for uninterrupted display of full-motion video with response times of 30ms, advertised at 25ms. This number is considered quite high as Hitachi has 16ms pixel redraw time. This is a measurement of how much time it takes for a pixel to light up and go completely black again. With Rapid Response™, the MultiSync LCD1920NX deliver streaming video with very little ghosting / blurring, while achieving 33 and 40 frames per second (fps) depending on the game. This low number for fps makes the model ideal for graphic design (digital input required) but not so good for gaming or video applications.

The stand can swivel as this is the only added feature compared to other LCD screens but comes at a cost of stability. If the table is bumped or the screen touched, the monitor will sway back and forth to the point of almost tipping even with the slightest bump.
