3.0 out of 5 stars NEC 100C Superscript Color Inkjet Cartridges, September 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: NEC Color Inkjet Cartridge for Superscript 100C (Office Product)
Although it is incredibly easy to install
- - as are most inkjet cartridges - -
even brand new NEC 100C Superscript cartridges
have a tendency to "dry out" and become useless
after a very short time, unless they are used frequently.

It seems that once "started",
the ink either evaporates or solidifies
at the cartridge's output/printhead/nozzle
(or whatever you call it!)

I use my color printer only once a month or so,
and only a few pages (with relatively little ink used),
so it is a VERY expensive proposition to buy cartridges
at that same frequency!

After the first such "dry out" problem,
I tried storing subsequent cartridges in the little receptacle
that came with the printer, but it didn't help.
I even tried wrapping it in wax paper and plastic wrap,
but all those did was create a messy blob of ink on the wrapping!

I also tried cleaning the cartridge's print heads
with isopropyl alcohol and/or water,
but that wasn't any help, either
(n.b., cleaning the heads in such a manner is not recommended
by the mfr, but since the cartridge was pretty much useless
at that point, I felt that I had to try SOMETHING!).

And, since no chain store carries NEC Superscript 100C
cartridges, I am forced to buy them online or via mail order,
which means having to spend extra money on shipping and handling,
and having to wait for the product to be shipped,
assuming it's not on backorder!

I'd also like to know why someone hasn't come up with a way
to put the "smarts" (i.e., the electronic strip)
of most manufacturer's cartridges
onto the printer rather than the cartridge.
That would, at least, reduce the cost significantly.

The drying-out problem needs to be fixed!
(NEC isn't alone with this problem)

So, if you use your NEC Superscript 100C color printer often,
you probably won't have the problem described, above
(but, then again, even if you don't have any problems,
you'll probably go through the cartridge very quickly,
so you'll wind-up spending as much as *I* did!)
