I am very pleased with this monitor. I did an extensive search, unfortunately primarily online -- it would be preferable to see monitors but that's not possible for all. For my Powerbook 15" G4, I looked at Apples and Samsungs, read reviews, and finally settled on this NEC because of its specs and general NEC reliability.
I've had it now almost a month, 6 or 7 or more hours/day and it's excellent, sharp, clear and true colors (as true as true is, at least) with ample adjustments possible --- and as an especial bonus, it's really helped my eyes. I had been getting quite serious eye strain with the PB (and also using an iMac) but there is something about the quality of the NEC which has helped greatly. Dec. 20: I remain very happy with the NEC monitor, no problems whatsoever. I just read a review in the Jan 08 MacWorld on LCDs that ranked the MultiSyncLCD205WXM the highest of 7 tested; maybe that's the new (and cheaper) version. Fwiw, it's an excellent and helpful article on how to choose an LCD.

I was like you -- reading reviews to make sure I was choosing the right monitor. And after reading and mulling over literally hundreds of reviews - I had finally narrowed it down to one. Though I am admittedly an NEC fan at heart, I was still willing to look at what other companies have going. This is by far the nicest monitor I've come across in a long time. It's absolutely huge, colors are spot on, and I've got no issue such as ghosting, bands, etc. I couldn't be happier about this product. Though I might seem rather expensive, this monitor is definitely worth every penny!
Amazon as always has great prices, quick and reliable shipping. Thanks!

NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2 20" LCD Monitor
I am sad to say that this monitor is no longer available on Amazon or Newegg. Your best bet would be to search eBay for one. I loved my first 20WMGX2-BK so much that I had to get another one. I bought a second one and received it within the past week from a seller on eBay. Barely used, practically perfect condition for a grand total of $185 including shipping! And to think that when I bought my first Brand New one off of Newegg it cost $499! Sure they had a rebate for -$100, of which I only ever saw $30 of, but that's a different story -_- On to the review... First off, I have to applaud NEC for making such a fine TFT-LCD with so many inputs and even an included speaker bar, though I never actually used it. You have Composite (*), S-Video (***), Component (****), VGA (*****) and DVI (******) In here, basically in line with an LCD TV. Once you see an AS-IPS monitor like this one, you will never want to go back to a TN panel like those that have been devoured by the masses (*cough* Samsung *cough*). I did have my doubts about the refresh rates and ghosting coming from a CRT display. I play Counter-Strike and Source competitively and I could definitely tell on the 15ms+ refresh rate LCD monitors of the past. However, this LCD practically feels like my old CRT and I no longer am blaming refresh rates for being annihilated, because it just feels fast. What I probably like most about this monitor is that its internal scaler does its job so well. I have done tests between its own scaler and the Nvidia scaler with an 8800GTS 640MB, and I found the Nvidia one to lack detail even with Edge Enhancement On. I am no longer bothered by Native and Non-Native resolution switching with the 20WMGX2. The colors on this LCD are superb. Light years beyond my ASUS W3J+ laptop's TN screen. They are comparable or even better than my $1500 Sony Bravia XBR LCD. And rightfully so, since they are based on the same or very similar TFT-LCD technology. Even the blacks are better than my XBR and there are no annoying clouds to be found, due to Sony's poor Quality Control not being present (Ok, so the Sony's are made in Mexico and the NEC's made in China... Not much better). I have watched 1080p HD DVD (well it's really only 1680x1050 anyway) movies on this thing, and have to say that it performs admirably. For a sample shot of the Planet Earth Miniseries HD DVD on this display, see: http://mysite.verizon.net/res7ly6l/planetearthHD.JPG Bottom Line, if you are searching for a cheap, high quality display I would skip the Samsungs and Heaven forbid buy an Apple Cinema. These displays stand right up to Apple's at a fraction of the cost. There are sellers willing to give these up, and believe me, these are an absolute steal!

THE BEST 1680x1050 LCD,
By
This review is from: NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2-BK 20.1" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
Best 1680 x 1050 overall LCD monitor available on the market.
It isn't suited for professional photo-editing, but comes very close (It will do if you are just starting out). I use this monitor mainly for playing games and watching movies. Considering the limited 1080p content out there, this monitor is just fine for HD playback @ 720p (Though, I must admit I want a 1920x1200 version of the monitor). NEC is preparing to launch this same monitor without the detachable speaker on the bottom of it for ~$350 - $400. PiP ... you'll find more use for it on a PC than you ever will on an actual TV and you might even be surprised at all the uses for it. As it has two inputs on the back, I actually attach both outputs from my PC's Video Card to the monitor and use the PiP as my secondary monitor and can play a movie while picking herbs in World of Warcraft at the same time. This monitor can toggle between your main PC and laptop/secondary PC. I hate looking at my Laptop's Monitor. This Monitor is a great all-in-one solution for starting video editors. I hook in my camcorder to the video input and watch footage using the PiP while editing other footage. To Add: PiP is adjustable. To Conclude: This monitor is an example of quality that all manufacturer's should strive to achieve. I'd put this up there with Onkyo Recievers and Auzentech Soundcards. Quality!

A visual treat,

I do a lot of photo editing and am getting interested in graphics. I had a first generation NEC LCD but the technology has turned over quite a bit and I was ready for an upgrade.
At first this monitor seemed very expensive for its size. However, online research taught me that it has a very good panel called AS-IPS. Most monitors have TN panels. The difference is that AS-IPS is superior in color reproduction and improved viewing angle over the very common TN panel monitors, which are faster and cheaper. There are very few monitors with AS-IPS panels that sell for under $600. In my opinion, this is the best of that tiny category. The resolution on this monitor is beautiful and the colors are hypnotizing. The widescreen format gives you valuable editing space. I am very happy that I bought it.

Years later and it beats out a LED LCD monitor from samsung,

This review is from: NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2-BK 20.1" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
So I've had this monitor for years, paid about 600 or so for it at frys a few years back. Started to get the itch to try out the new Samsung 24" LED LCD monitor, and have a duel monitor setup. Well after 2 days of duel monitors I'm back to a single monitor, back went the LED LCD. I'm spoiled off this nice TFT screen. Sure the blacks are not quit as deep but man the color is spot on, not like that cheap LED screen. I tried for days to get colors to be acceptable but no go. Worse was the Samsung low brightness- lumen output in comparison, my NEC is so much brighter and crisper. I can't believe this old NEC kicked that new LED LCD displays ass!
