A gorgeous monitor,
By Frank Ramsbottom "Frank" (Vancouver, BC, Canada) - See all my reviews

I hate to contradict the previous reviewer, but this monitor does come with built-in speakers, and the base does not detach; the on-screen controls are in the base. I wonder whether the previous reviewer has even seen one of these monitors in real life.
I bought one yesterday, and I am very pleased with it indeed. The casing is a nice neutral silver colour, which I find makes it easier to look at because it's not distracting to the eyes. It also matches very well with new Apple equipment, such as a G5 or PowerBook. If I sit in my chair and lean from one side to another, the image on the monitor does not change with the viewing angle much at all. I was pleased by this. Other monitors may have a wider viewing angle, but the viewing angle is certainly more than adequate for me, and I don't know why it would need to be any wider. The built-in speakers (in the base at the back, and at the bottom of the screen pointing out to the side) are a little tinny, but they're just nice add-on that I didn't even notice until after I'd bought the monitor. They'd be fine for office work, but if you're listening to music or watching films, you'd do better to plug proper speaks into the handy audio out plug, located on the back of the monitor base. The picture is clear, bright, and vibrant. I have no malfunctioning pixels, which pleases me immensely. The on-screen configuration is a little quirky, but it's not something that I'll be playing with on a regular basis, so I really don't care. The power button lights up a vibrant blue colour, as does the NEC logo on the back, which is kinda cool. I was a little put off by the blue, as it's that same blue that was so popular in consumer electronics last year (it says "teen fad" to me). But when it comes down to it, the picture is fantastic and the design is very nice; this is just the kind of top-quality product I expect from NEC, and for the price I really couldn't find any other monitor that I thought was as good. If you're not obsessed with every tiny technical specification, and you just want a quality monitor that looks really good for a decent price, I am confident that any normal person would be very happy with an NEC LCD1735NXM.

I boutght this monitor to replace an older CRT. I was worried about shadowing at first, however the 16ms response time has proven to compete with CRT's even when gamming. The display is very nice, sharp pictures and crisp letters makes it a ease to look at. Set up was a breeze with the plug and play, all cables are located at the back of the base. This allows you to set it up with out the eye-sore of cables at the back of your desk. Menu controls are a bit touchy, but once you get use to them they are fine.
BAD: built in speakers are bery weak. Poor sound quality. I would recommend using external speakers if you require sound. This was not a problem for me because I already had a good speaker system.

This is an excellent monitor. I've been using it for over 3 months and I love it. Color and clarity are great. Played with computer game without ghost. There is no apparent difference between DVI and VGA although I'm using DVI right now and I had to purchase DVI cable separately.
Rebate sucks. I have filed twice and so far rebate claim is still not in their system. I'm not quite certain if I'm going to get the $90 rebate eventually. otherwise this is a pretty expensive monitor. Think it over before you buy.
